For the first chapter of Surface Design Lab,
Meet - Matthew Utley, Founder & Principal at NOWMA Matthew Utley
who shares the inspiration, story and artistic thinking behind his design concept. Rooted in creativity and perspective, his idea is more than an artwork it is a personal expression brought to life through texture, colour and form.
From the initial concept, the journey moves into the hands of our craftsmen at BSH Walls & Floors. Through careful material selection, yarn development and precise composition, Matthew’s vision begins its transformation from a design on paper into a tactile, handcrafted creation.
Now, the concept has entered the tufting stage where every line, layer and detail is built by hand. With each pass of the tufting gun, the design gains depth, character and dimension, bringing us one step closer to the final reveal.
But the process does not end there. Once the tufting is complete, the piece will move through finishing and sample development before Matthew experiences the moment when his original vision becomes a finished reality.
