AN ISFAHAN CARPET
Central Persia
Woven by Farzad Seirafian
The deep midnight field of this finely woven Isfahan carpet is organized around an elegant central medallion, from which a dense network of finely drawn arabesques and floral palmettes extends across the surface in a continuous, balanced arrangement. The composition is framed by a series of shaped cartouches and ornamental reserves, rather than traditional corner spandrels, creating a unified and uninterrupted visual field.
The drawing is exceptionally precise, with scrolling eslimi vines, Shah-Abbasi blossoms, and rosettes rendered with remarkable clarity and rhythmic consistency. The disciplined symmetry and assured spacing of the motifs reflect the classical Isfahan aesthetic at its most refined, revealing the confident hand of a master workshop.
Woven at an approximate density of 121 knots per square centimetre, using the Persian (Senneh) knot in a single-weft (tak-kheft) structure, the carpet displays outstanding sharpness of detail and definition of contour. This technically demanding construction allows for a highly controlled and articulate rendering of the complex ornamental vocabulary.
The colour palette, derived entirely from natural dyes, combines deep dark tones with ivory, warm terracotta, muted gold, and subtle rose accents, producing strong contrast and depth while maintaining overall harmony.
Carpets of this quality are regarded as collectible works of textile art, valued for their technical mastery, compositional sophistication, and enduring connection to the classical Isfahan tradition.
