I think it might be.

Before perfect tension, complicated stitches or knowing exactly what you are doing, there is patience. Patience to learn, to unravel, to start again and to accept that some things simply cannot be rushed.

Perhaps that is one of the nicest things craft teaches us.

A little reminiscence on a Sunday morning...

This weave will always be very special to me. I made this piece at home more than 10 years ago, experimenting with different yarns, textures and all those wonderful loops... and somewhere while working on it, the idea for KOEL Magazine came to me.

Funny to think how one creative morning can quietly turn into something much bigger....

There was a time I measured a good week by how much I finished. More projects, more output, more to show for the hours. I don't measure it that way anymore.

One piece made with care outlasts ten made in a hurry. The stitches hold better. The color choices feel considered instead of convenient. And honestly, I remember making it. The fast ones blur together.

Quality was never about talent. It's about refusing to rush.

Small World, Wide Open is this week's new story in the KOEL kiosk. Hiroto and Masako Fujiwara work from Kamakura, a coastal town of temples and green hills in Kanagawa, and their studio is called Fagelbo ... Swedish for bird's nest. It fits. Everything they weave is small enough to hold in one hand. Narrow bands and ribbons, flowers and figures the size of an insect leaning into a blossom. Both trained as art educators before Hiroto moved into woodworking and Masako into textiles and painting, and now they raise two children alongside the work, with the line between parenting and making left loose on purpose.



The story comes with their Kimono Sash pattern, woven on a rigid heddle or inkle loom in embroidery thread.

Mini looms are perfect for making swatches, testing color combinations and seeing how different yarns behave together before committing to something bigger. Sometimes the tiniest sample tells you everything you need to know.

Even the projects that don't work out taught my hands something. The skein I frogged twice. The pattern I abandoned halfway. None of it was lost time, even when it felt that way.

Making by hand is not measured the same way as other work. There's no failed attempt, only practice that happened to produce something imperfect. The learning stays even when the object doesn't.

I stopped counting unfinished projects as failures a long time ago.
