Tonight in Shirlington from 6-8 pm. I will be trying to figure out how we find ourselves and what that even means. Can you get back something you’ve lost or do you come to an acceptance that it was never yours to begin with?

I wrote this book over 3 years. I had not gone back to Afghanistan when I started it. I’ve gone three times since.

I am so proud of who I am. But understand it comes with its own baggage. And it’s stuff we need to talk about.

So I hope to see you tonight.

I’m done chasing the algorithm. I want you to buy my cookbook (link in bio) and come to my author talk on 5/23 but I have nothing to sell you otherwise. I have a dozen videos in drafts that will come out soon and I’m working on a podcast - why not! And I’ll be working on pashto Afghan Cooks as well as really putting effort into my law firm’s social media

Anyway, is planting and growing season. Yes it’s a metaphor.

I am so excited to be speaking in conversation with the incredibly talented Afghan American poet . We will be talking about how we find our way back to ourselves as immigrants, refugees, people who long for a home they never had and never will. What does belonging taste like? And do we ever stop longing for home?

End of April photo dump yes I don’t actually take a lot of pictures because I’m too busy figuring out how to take a good picture as you can see I’m not the best at it but hey. I’m just over here living my life. Anyway. flying over the mountains in Denver I think and then me with an alien buying beef jerky. Finally got to where I was supposed to be eating Afghan food at my uncle’s house in Irvine.

I’ve partnered with for a once in a lifetime trip to the beautiful and badly misunderstood country of Afghanistan. Explore the beauty this country has to offer while also bearing witness to the real situation of Afghans living in Afghanistan. I’ll be co-hosting this so we will be spending a lot of time eating and learning about the food culture of my home country.

October is pomegranate season in Afghanistan and the weather is perfect in every region of the country.

When: September 26-October 10, 2026
Cost: 2500.00 USD all inclusive (meals, transport and hotels WITHIN Afghanistan) flights into and out of the country and visa fees are not included

As I get older I think more and more about how it must have been for my parents who had always dreamed of a life in Afghanistan, a house in Kabul and kids who ran barefoot in the gardens of their own fathers. I can’t look at photos of them when they’d first come to America so much hope and happiness of a future that was never to be. But they made it work. My father a surgeon and my mother everything under the sun. They raised three kids who all love where they are from. I don’t know. Age has mellowed me and made me much sadder but also much more aware of how powerful joy is.
