What do the world’s most successful public spaces have in common?
Whether you are walking through a waterfront promenade, a city square, or a vibrant pedestrian district, the same principles appear again and again.
Clear orientation helps people move comfortably through a space.
Human scale makes places feel welcoming rather than overwhelming.
Accessibility ensures everyone can participate.
Comfort encourages people to stay longer.
And a strong atmosphere gives people a reason to return.
The most memorable public spaces are rarely defined by a single attraction. They succeed because all of these elements work together to create a positive experience.
Lighting often plays a unique role in connecting them. It supports navigation, highlights important features, improves comfort, and helps shape the emotional character of a place.
A good example is our recent project for the Holstenfleet area in Kiel, Germany.
Under the concept "Meer als nur Bling Bling" ("More than Just Bling Bling"), developed by Carolin Wolters from our Design Creation & Concepts team, the project draws inspiration from Kiel's strong connection to the sea. A large illuminated globe featuring mirror-like facets and vibrant blue acrylic fish creates a striking focal point while also providing seating and a memorable photo opportunity. Warm white lighting accents the architectural lines of the waterfront, helping to create a welcoming winter atmosphere throughout the promenade.
Great public spaces are not created by chance. They are built through thoughtful design decisions that help people feel connected to a place and to each other.
