The founder of the company, Mr. Erich Mautner, received export approvals for antique icons in the early 1960s from the Russian government. Mautner developed an extensive icon trade, worldwide. Collectors and traders from all over the world came flocking, to acquire some copies of these rarity treasures. Every piece of these splendid icons was examined by the icon expert of the Vienna Dorotheum and was provided with a certificate. On this expert's certificate he described what is shown and when the icon was painted and with his signature he confirmed the genuineness. As subjects the icon painters showed mainly the most famous mercy pictures of the Mother of God and son, as sore active and rich in mercies were revered by the Russians. But also Pantocrator as a woe ruler was painted in many variations. Near Moscow there were famous painting schools, for instance: Palekh, Suzdal, Vladimir etc. where masters and pupils together painted the most splendid icons of high artistic quality. Because the orthodox religion attained meaning in Russia again, the icons decorate churches and residential homes. Beyond Russia a bigger number of valuable icons is extremely seldom seen, with the exception of some museums. In our shop, however a big number of select icons are on exhibition. Some of these extraordinary icons are more than 200 years old.

🇬🇧 The Dormition of the Mother of God

On 15 August, the Orthodox Church celebrates one of its most important Marian feasts: the Dormition of the Mother of God – the Koimesis.

At the centre of the composition, the Mother of God lies on her deathbed, surrounded by the assembled Apostles. Above her stands Christ, holding her soul in His arms. The iconography thus speaks not only of death, but above all of the passage from earthly life to eternal life.

This Russian icon from the 19th century presents this central theme of Orthodox iconography in a richly layered composition.

Anastasis | Russian Orthodox Icon | 17th century | The Anastasis (Greek for “Resurrection”) is the traditional Easter image in the Orthodox Church, depicting Christ’s descent into Hades. Unlike the Western tradition, which often focuses on the empty tomb, this icon shows the risen Christ liberating Adam and Eve from the underworld.

Today we came across the latest issue of H.O.M.E. magazine — dedicated to “Icons” of modern design.

A beautiful reminder that every era defines its own icons.

In the world of interiors, an icon may be a chair, a lamp, a visionary designer.
In our world, an icon is something entirely different:

Timeless.
Spiritual.
Hand-painted.
Created not for trends — but for eternity.

An antique Orthodox icon placed in a contemporary interior creates a powerful contrast:
minimalism meets devotion, clean lines meet gold ground, modern space meets centuries of tradition.

And suddenly, the room changes.

Because true icons never go out of style.
