What separates an award-winning kitchen from one that simply photographs well?

Photography can compress a room into one perfect viewpoint.

It can conceal awkward circulation, unresolved ends, inconsistent junctions or a design idea that disappears as soon as the camera moves.

A highly resolved kitchen has to withstand closer examination.

The plan must work during daily use.
The central idea must remain clear.
The proportions must hold from every approach.
Material transitions and junctions must feel intentional.

And the documentation must be detailed enough to carry the idea through construction.
In Norwood, the central idea was a kitchen island that read as a piece of furniture rather than a block of cabinetry.

For that idea to feel convincing, it could not rely on one strong elevation.

The ends, seating side, rear, corners and material transitions all had to belong to the same composition.

Restraint kept the room visually calm.
Technical resolution made that restraint possible.
Norwood’s recognition by KBDi in 2026 was independent acknowledgement of that thinking—but the award is not the most valuable part for the client.

The value is in closing the gap between the original concept, the drawings, the construction and the way the kitchen is experienced every day.

A photograph can make a room look complete.
Resolution is what makes it feel complete.

How do you know whether a designer’s process is right for your project?

A portfolio can tell you whether you respond to a designer’s finished work.

It cannot always tell you how they reached it—or whether that process will suit you.
Before appointing a designer, consider:
Where does the thinking begin?
How are ideas tested and documented?
How does the designer collaborate without losing clarity?

Who protects the original idea as the project moves through construction?
Does the outcome respond to your life and architecture—or repeat a familiar look?
My process begins with joinery.

The built-in establishes how a room moves, stores, functions and most importantly feels. Materials, furniture and finishes then support that underlying logic.

The process is collaborative, but it is not directionless.

I bring a clear point of view, work closely with clients, makers and project teams, and resolve decisions so the original idea can survive delivery.
This approach is for clients who value original thinking, detailed planning and a considered collaborative process.

The right designer is not simply the person whose portfolio you admire.

It is the person whose process matches the depth of outcome you want.

Awarded | KBDi Australian Certified Designer of the Year 2026.

For CLAYFIELD.

In 2022, I was named Australian Kitchen Designer of the Year.
Four years later, this is a different national honour.

Certified Designer of the Year recognises not only the finished interior, but the planning, documentation and technical resolution required to carry an idea from its first line through to construction.

CLAYFIELD is a project defined by restraint.

Every junction, corner and surface was carefully resolved. The furniture-like island challenges the conventions of a traditional kitchen, while the materials and detailing respond quietly to the character of the home.

To have both the interior and the work behind it recognised at this level is difficult to put into words.
Interiors are the subject. Joinery is the method.

This award reflects the trust of my clients and the care of every maker, trade, supplier and collaborator who helped bring CLAYFIELD into being.

To each of you, thank you.

An extraordinary honour—and one of the most significant moments of my career.

Awarded | KBDi NT + SA Kitchen Designer of the Year 2026.

For NORWOOD.

In 2022, I received the South Australian title for the first time.

To return four years later and receive this recognition across South Australia and the Northern Territory carries a different weight.

The practice has grown. The projects have become broader. But the starting point remains the same: listening carefully, resolving how the interior needs to work, and carrying that thinking through every drawing and detail.

This title reflects far more than my contribution alone.

It belongs to clients who place their trust in the process, and to the makers, trades, suppliers and collaborators who give the work its final form.

To each of you, thank you.

NORWOOD.

Awarded | KBDi Kitchen Plus NT + SA 2026.

This project began with the challenge of making an existing space work harder and feel more resolved.

The planning created clearly defined zones within the kitchen, while reeded glass, sculptural forms and carefully considered details gave the interior its own quiet character.

To have NORWOOD recognised by the KBDi judges is an incredible honour.

Thank you to my clients for trusting the direction, and to every maker, trade and supplier who brought such care to its ex*****on.

A very proud moment for this project—and for everyone behind it.

LEABROOK, CLAYFIELD and NORWOOD have also each received a nomination for KBDi Australian Certified Designer of the Year.
Each began with a different brief, a different context and a different way of living or working.

What connects them is the thinking behind the work. Bringing clarity to complex decisions. Resolving function from the inside out. Creating interiors designed to hold their value well beyond the moment in which they were made.

To see four distinct projects recognised together, plus three considered for Australian Certified Designer of the Year is an extraordinary honour.
