When the First World War ended in 1918, a year after the Russian Revolution had begun, the world was left in disarray. What followed was a period of intense rebellion; of the Jazz Age, when the Bright Young Things were Charlestoning their way across glossy dancefloors, eschewing the restrictions of Victorian and Edwardian values.⁠
⁠
Art Deco represents a major shift away from other styles of the period: where they used stone, Art Deco used concrete or brick. Gable roofs had been dominant, but Art Deco preferred the flat roof option: distinction and modernity were paramount.⁠

Californian bungalows populate Australian suburbia. Their simple, one-storey design made them easy to build and a delight to live in. Their gardens are generous, their ceilings high and they can be seen to be an architectural promotion of the Australian lifestyle if ever there was one, encapsulating the notion of indoor-outdoor living; and the rambunctious nature of kids racing between the two. ⁠

Built to house the rapidly increasing populations of California at the turn of the twentieth century, Californian bungalows were designed in a style that consciously went against Victorian excess, which didn’t serve the hot climate. The style would soon get exported to Australia shortly afterwards, where the weather is similar and the populations, too, were booming. Californian-style bungalows soon took hold, remaining popular in Australia throughout the first half of the 20th century. Today they remain key to the Australian suburban aesthetic. ⁠

The architecture of this period reflected this sense of change, with buildings featuring architectural expressions reflective of the country’s newfound place in international society: solid, exposed brickwork meant stability; verandahs worked with, rather than against, Australia’s hot climate. It was the dawn of a uniquely Australian form of architecture, rather than a derivatively British one.
