Yin and yang is a concept that originated in Chinese philosophy, symbolizing a dynamic and interconnected cycle of opposites that coexist and complement each other. These forces—often thought of as opposing yet deeply intertwined—illustrate the idea that every part of a system plays a crucial role in maintaining balance. I vividly remember my first beach clean. I was living in a coastal town in Victoria, studying Marine Biology at university. Eager to meet new people, I started looking for volunteer groups and came across Beach Patrol 3280, who had just announced 'The Great Nurdle Hunt' after a nurdle spill on a local beach.

I showed up feeling nervous, unsure of what to expect. Before I knew it, I was sitting in the sand, eyes glued to the ground, searching for those tiny plastic nurdles. By the time I left, I was on a high—filled with a new passion and a deep sense of purpose. I knew I wanted to do everything I could to help our oceans and combat marine debris.

For the next five years, I immersed myself in school group cleanups, campaigns, and weekly beach cleans with Tangaroa Blue, recording changes and data on the same stretch of beach. Those experiences shaped my journey and reinforced the importance of remembering where it all began.

I’m far from perfect—I still use single-use items more than I’d like. But I know I’ve made a difference. I’ve likely saved marine animals from ingesting harmful debris and inspired others to take action. It’s a reminder that small steps, taken consistently, can lead to meaningful change.

Given the theme of 'something beachy, with blues and greens,' my imagination immediately started to wander. Working alongside Kate in the breathtaking Whitsunday Islands, I couldn’t help but think of the iconic white swirls of Whitehaven Beach. This inspiration became the heart of the piece. I’m so grateful for the trust Kate placed in me to bring her vision to life—it was an absolute joy to create something so deeply connected to the place we both cherish.

From the very beginning of my collecting journey, I wanted to ensure that everything I gathered and sorted was arranged in a way that was visually striking. I discovered that by presenting marine debris in an aesthetically pleasing way, it could capture people’s attention and provoke thought. This philosophy naturally found its way into my artwork as well.
Here, you’ll see just a small selection of my collections—each one a testament to the persistent presence of items like bottle lids, plastic bottles, pegs, toothbrushes, and, of course, fragments of broken hard plastic.
