The recent mural in the Ritz arcade features a couch that would match this bright pink Victorian gents chair that I restored not long ago for a customer in Tocumwal. Wouldn't it be a bit of fun to sit it in the arcade beside the painting for a photo! ( I'm sure AI can do that)

The cedar chair is about 1860s vintage and was reupholstered in Zepel Lux II cotton velvet, along with repairs to the frame and revival of the old shellac polish.

Sadly alot of these 150 year old chairs are not in vogue these days, requiring a huge amount of time and expertise to restore properly. I often see them on marketplace for very low prices, undervalued and unappreciated by the current mainstream society, like most antique furniture is these days.

We are loosing our heritage and history by neglecting this furniture, all due to fashion and cheap throw away products. The skills required to restore aren't being passed on through lack of demand and in decades to come, it will be hard to find antique furniture in well preserved condition, let alone the tradespeople with the skills to restore it.

At least I know that the antiques I restore will still be strong and usable in generations from now.

Recently I was repairing an old piano stool, about 1920s vintage, and found this amazing original old velvet beneath 2 later covers. The colours and condition for a 100 year old fabric was quite unique. Old fabrics like these are often quite brittle and tear easily when you try to remove them from the job, but luckily I was able to get it off in one piece and my customer is keen to keep it.

It's not uncommon in old upholstered furniture to find an earlier cover under a later one, in fact one old Victorian ladies chair I once stripped had 6 covers on it! What an insight into different fabric designs over 150 years, almost like archaeology!
Unfortunately though, the fabric is usually very worn out and falling apart, so it was particularly interesting to find this fabric in such good, vibrant condition.

This is a good product, i have used it to repolish chair frames and other pieces. For those who used to buy Osmo oil, I've found Fiddes works better for me.

Some great news coming up...
Tkel furniture is now a new stockist for oil. If you are after a high-quality, long-lasting, and easy to use product, you have found it in Fiddies.
We have been using it on all our oiled furniture and benchtops for a couple of years now and can't fault it.
A great product that has plenty of uses, including flooring, benchtops, furniture, decking, and outdoor furniture, just to name a few.
We have a great selection available. If you have anything you need, please feel free to get in touch with us, we'd be happy to assist in any way we can.

SUMMERFIELD UPHOLSTERY 80 YEARS IN BUSINESS.

This Art Nouveau club couch ( circa 1920s) has been restored in Mokum fabrics Palm Springs, a beautiful, heavy, high quality velvet. It's one of the more spectacular and unique jobs I have done in the past few years. Scroll down to the before photos, it was about 3 inches lower, with a collapsing seat and lumpy back. I've added extra timber to the bottom of the frame and extra blocks on the feet to raise it.( people were much smaller in the 1920s when this was made).
This is the third cover to go on it, the last was a 1980s tapestry and before that it was covered in its original 1920s Genoan velvet. However, this job was also a complete rebuild of the springs, frame and padding, so hopefully it will last another century!

This couch belongs to a customer, its not for sale.

PLEASE NOTE THAT I'M BOOKED WITH WORK FOR OVER 6 MONTHS.

SUMMERFIELD UPHOLSTERY 80 YEARS!
1946 - 2026
For 3 generations and 80 years the Summerfield family has been restoring upholstered furniture in Albury.
In 1946, after returning from the war, my grandfather Thomas Summerfield went into partnership with an upholsterer Bill Thurling. Tom was a cabinet maker and together with Bill they apprenticed Tom's brother-in-law, Norm Hart, as an upholsterer (my Great Uncle and mentor). Eventually Tom bought the business outright, expanding into Antique sales and restoration, French polishing, upholstery and cabinet making. Tom's sons Charlie and Don (my father) followed him into the furniture business, with Charlie running it for many years.
I joined the business in 1989 when I was apprenticed as an upholsterer with Great Uncle Norm.
In the Early 2000's the business was scaled back with my Dad and uncle's retiring. I have continued to run the furniture upholstery business since then on my own.

Although the next generation of my family looks to be heading in quite a different direction to a career in upholstering, I hope I'll be celebrating 90 years in business a decade from now.
Cheap mass-produced furniture from Asia that quickly becomes landfill, has changed the furniture restoration business from the busy, highly skilled craft it was in my grandfathers time. However working on my own, I still get months of work in advance from people who appreciate the quality craftsmanship that goes into the pieces I do.
Paul Summerfield

PLEASE NOTE THAT I'M BOOKED WITH WORK FOR OVER 6 MONTHS. Currently not accepting more bookings ATM until I catch up a bit!

Photos are of a recent restoration of a Edwardian leather armchair.
