Spot the difference

One is more compact flower.
The petals are slightly narrower and more cupped, giving the bloom a little more depth rather than the flat “saucer”
* higher stem production,
* longer stems,
* better vase life, - have had it in a vase for 6 weeks and still standing!

Pink Ice develops deep red, burgundy or bronze foliage during winter, especially in Mediterranean climates like Western Australia.

The main reasons are:

1. Cold nights slow chlorophyll production.
2. Bright winter sunshine still delivers high UV radiation.
3. The plant produces anthocyanins (red pigments) to protect the leaves from light damage while photosynthesis is temporarily reduced.
4. Growth slows during winter, so the protective pigments remain visible for longer.

In essence, the plant is putting on a natural winter sunscreen.

Only become concerned if the red leaves are accompanied by:

* stunted shoots,
* distorted growth,
* extensive spotting,
* wilting, or
* dieback.
