PRACTICAL STRATEGIES FOR A CALMER HOME

Supporting a neurodivergent child doesn’t mean doing more — sometimes it means changing the way we approach everyday moments.

Siimple strategies at home:

1. BUILD A ROUTINE
Predictability can make everyday tasks feel less overwhelming. Create simple morning, after-school and bedtime routines that your child can see and follow.

2. BREAK IT DOWN
Instead of: " Go get ready for school.”
Try:
Shoes on
Brush teeth
Get dressed
Pack your bag

One step at a time can feel much more achievable.

3. CONNECT FIRST
Before correcting or giving instructions, connect. Get down to their level, use their name and acknowledge how they are feeling.

Sometimes: “I can see this is hard. Let’s do it together.” works better than another reminder.

4. MAKE IT VISUAL
Don't rely on memory alone. Try checklists, visual schedules, timers, colour-coded reminders or a whiteboard. External supports can make invisible steps easier to manage.

5. PRAISE THE PROGRESS — NOT JUST THE FINISH LINE
Notice the small wins.

“You started without me asking.”
“You remembered your first step.”
“You kept trying even when it was difficult.”

Specific, positive feedback helps children recognise their own progress.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY… BE THEIR SAFE PLACE.

Your child doesn't need you to have all the answers.

They need to know:

“I’m here.”
“We can work this out together.”
“You are not your behaviour.”
“You are safe with me.”

Connection, structure and support can go a long way toward helping children build confidence and independence.

Hi, I’m Vesna — the face behind Edspire Learning Co

I wanted to take a moment to properly introduce myself.

I’ve spent many years working in education, supporting children with different learning needs and seeing first-hand how difficult school can become when the traditional way of learning simply doesn’t work for a child.

Over the years, I’ve worked alongside students, families, teachers and support staff — and I’ve learned that sometimes a child doesn’t need more pressure. They need someone to understand them, believe in them and find a way of learning that works with them.

That’s why I created Edspire.

Edspire is something very personal to me. It’s built around my experience, my passion for supporting neurodivergent children and my belief that every child deserves to feel capable, understood and successful.

I support children with learning, confidence, executive functioning and study skills, while also supporting parents who may sometimes feel overwhelmed trying to navigate it all.

I’m not here to promise a quick fix.

I’m here to listen, understand and work alongside your family to find what actually works.

So, if you’re new here — welcome to Edspire.

FACT: Many autistic people deeply value connection — they may simply communicate, socialise, or express interest in ways that differ from neurotypical norms.

Autistic individuals often build friendships through shared interests, predictable routines, and meaningful one‑on‑one interactions. Connection is absolutely wanted — it just might look different. When we understand and respect those differences, relationships can flourish.

Key reminder: Communication differences are not a lack of desire for connection. They’re just differences.

So, the school has called and they've said your child needs an IEP. But… what does that actually mean?

An IEP (Individual Education Plan) is a personalised plan created to support your child’s learning at school.

It helps teachers understand:
Your child’s strengths
Areas where they need support
Learning goals
Classroom adjustments and strategies that can help them succeed

An IEP might include:
Extra time for tasks or assessments
Modified work or learning goals
Sensory or movement breaks
Organisation and executive function supports
Small group or targeted support
Strategies that match your child’s unique learning profile

An IEP is not a label.

It is a tool designed to help your child access learning, build confidence and experience success at school.

Sometimes the traditional way of teaching doesn’t fit into every child’s way of learning!! You just have to find what works for them!!

This week I worked with a student creating Minecraft castles to facilitate a medieval Europe assessment! He created a blueprint, cost analysis and created the final product in Minecraft Education so proud of what he was able to achieve!!
