Shalome is a seventh generation Australian woman of European and UK decent, currently living on the lands of the Wadawurrung people. She learnt to make ininti (beads from the seeds of the bats-wing coral tree) under guidance from Walpiri elders at Yuendumu and to craft beads from flowers and wood using her own ingenuity and the advice of other rose petal beadmakers online. She is a self taught wea

Reconciliation week and national day of healing beads (for yesterday). Honouring all those lives lost or otherwise impacted by colonisation and the continuing practices of child removal, indoctrination through education, and incarceration - to name a few. Listening with care and humility to traditional owners about how to move forward with love, healing and respect. A very different kind of ‘one nation’ than that espoused by Pauline Hanson.

This one is called Cinderella.

See, the two stepsisters at this end connected to the stepmother at the other.

Where is Cinderella? you might ask.

She is there, along with her mother (Vasillisa’s mother if you prefer it that way), in the snaking, circling lines that weave them together, making them feel that they are strong and united, and can and will destroy her beauty and her purity of soul.

But you see they won’t, and they can’t, because their strength is an illusion, their unity is an illusion, that only the beauty of Cinderella and her mother together with the fierce power of baba yaga (whom we have turned into a very tame fairy godmother), are holding together through the real strong connections between women that really exist, and aren’t just pretending.

The stepsisters and stepmother are really just islands, waiting to erode into the stream.

Practicing the Brahmagranthi, a knot used in mala making, representing also, one of three psychic knots in the energy body in Vedic thought. This is a granthi, a knot or blockage, related to earthly concerns such as worry over food, shelter, health issues, (petrol prices), a general lack of grounding and also fear of death.

As each knot is tied a mantra is spoken. I use the one I recently was taught, known as the Gayatri Mantra. Aum on its own is sufficient.

I need more practice, especially with this thread, but it is a practice I am keen to repeat, many times over.

I have always loved making clothes.
And I have always loved story.
Some years ago, I became enamoured of the story of Vasilisa, you know, the one that seems to have left its traces (of something raw and powerful) within the doctored story of Cinderella.
My mother made me a doll, just like Vasilisa. I have had this doll for over 40 years and it only just occurred to me that I could make clothes for it.
Her name is Ayah.
She has a brown outfit made by my mother.
Now she has a beautiful coloured outfit sewn by hand, by me.
Skirt: made from a silk kameez, gift of Sunita
Top: from a handwoven French table napkin, gift of Marie Louise
Scarf: saori weaving by Prue, gift of Prue
Pocket handkercheif: Piran’s old shorts

I’m afraid the mess of scrap fabrics on my floor are all clothes in the making, clothes under construction, or clothes that have yet to be imagined.

Who knew making clothes for my longest companion could be so fulfilling!

I did a bit of a tidy on my website, update a few things, and made it generally a lot simpler. Its still not quite reflective of how it ought to be. If you have suggestions on how to make it 'better' (without over commercialising) please let me know.
Thanks!

Beads are the oldest known human art form, providing an unbroken connection to the deep history of our species.
