Burdock in flower is an exercise in quiet persistence.

Tall, unapologetic, and often overlooked, its rounded purple blooms hold a small piece of modern history. It was these hooked flowers that cling stubbornly to passing coats and animal fur, that inspired the invention of Velcro. A reminder that even the most ordinary encounters with plants can quietly change the way we live.

Long before that moment of innovation, burdock was well known in home herbal traditions. Its roots, leaves, and seeds were gathered with care and used in simple remedies, for everything from skin eruptions to a general tonic, valued for generations as part of everyday household practice. Not a flashy plant, but a steady one, growing where it’s needed, offering itself without ceremony.

Standing with burdock as it flowers, there’s a sense of patience and resilience. It doesn’t ask to be admired, yet rewards those who take the time to notice. A plant that reminds us that usefulness, beauty, and inspiration often arrive hand in hand, quietly, and in their own time.

A book club for herbs, health & natural living lovers.

The Twigs and Moss Book Circle is a slow, thoughtful reading space for those drawn to plants, seasonal living, and a deeper relationship with health and the natural world. Together, we’ll read one book at a time, sharing reflections, gentle questions, and lived experience along the way, with space to listen, learn, and grow in community.
We will be announcing our first book soon! Message or email us at [email protected] to be added to the circle!

It’s also a gentle exploration of a relationship:ng on the quiet differences in dried herbs. How time, handling, and care can shape their vitality, and what it means to choose with intention.

Corn silk is one of those quiet treasures easily overlooked, the soft, silvery threads that wrap themselves around each cob like a secret.

Often a gentle introduction to herbal tea, corn silk has been traditionally used to support the urinary system and is known for its mild, slightly sweet corn flavour, making it easy and pleasant to drink. It has long been valued in both Chinese and South American traditions, and is often spoken of in relation to its natural vitamin content.

For many years, I didn’t know its story and let it slip away with the husks, discarded without a second thought. Now, as the corn is shucked each season, those silky strands are gathered with care, no longer waste, but a small ritual, and a quietly prized part of the harvest.

Calendula is like a little sunbeam in the garden, golden petals and quiet cheer, lifting the mood simply by being there.

Long treasured in traditional herbal practice, calendula has been lovingly associated with calming, soothing qualities and has often been spoken of in relation to gentle cleansing and care. It’s a generous plant, easy to grow, and a joy to work with, especially when infused into simple skin creams, where you can really begin to know its character.

The petals are best gathered in the morning, once the dew has slipped away, when the flowers are open and glowing, as if ready to be carried indoors and put to good use.

It happens all around us, in every tick of the clock, yet it is so very easy to miss. Nature, going about its business, keeps the world turning, changing in tiny ways that move us forward through seasons of the year, and the seasons of our lives. And just like nature, it is the little movements that bring us forward in our own lives, our health, and our wellbeing. The little things you choose to do today matter. Notice something beautiful, something amazing, something kind, or something simple that lets you stop and fill you with wonder.
