We see so many people starting DIY renovations without making sure they have avoided all of these major mistakes - if you're about to start a DIY reno, read the below to ensure a seamless renovation, making the project as stress free as possible.
1️⃣ Starting without a clear plan.
Jumping straight into demolition or buying materials without a full plan is the main way many DIYers blow their budget.
Why it’s a problem:
You might end up changing layout mid-way
Materials don’t match (different tile batches, colour variances)
Trades have to redo work or redo their own plans.
Although it's exciting to get hands on straight away, do this instead: Finalise layout, measurements, finishes, and sequencing before you touch anything.
2️⃣ Don’t ignore structural or compliance rules
DIYers sometimes assume “it’s just a wall” or “it’s just plumbing”, however small changes can require permits or be structural.
Why it’s a problem:
You can weaken the home structure
Hidden costs galore
You might have to rethink or restart your entire reno
Instead make sure you always consult with a professional regarding changes in these areas.
3️⃣ Don’t cheap out on trade works
Why it’s a problem:
Bathroom leaks from poor waterproofing = mould + strip out
Bad electrical = fire risk
Incorrect plumbing = leaks + mould + strip out
Ensure you license in professionals for trade requirements, even if you are DIYing as much as you can.
4️⃣Don’t underestimate timelines
Why it’s a problem:
You end up rushing to finish, cutting corners
You live in chaos until completion
Costs can increase due to delays
The key is to plan well, and allow lengthier timeframes to avoid disappointment
5️⃣Don’t buy materials before confirming all measurements
Why it’s a problem:
Wrong quantities or sizes (variances)
Colour batches don’t match if you require more
Materials sit around damaged or unusable, or even exposed to elements
Make sure you complete a final measure of everything after demo and order in one go.
