Most people have no idea why their candle tunnels — and it's not their fault. Nobody explains it.
Tunnelling happens when the wax around the wick melts before the surface layer does. A small pool forms in the middle, the wick drowns in it, and the outer wax never melts at all. You've essentially wasted most of your candle.
The fix? Your very first burn is the most important one. Let the candle burn until the entire top layer has melted — edge to edge. That's called the memory burn, and it sets the wax's habit for every burn after it.
This is the kind of thing I teach at my Candle Making Workshop. Practical knowledge that makes a real difference to the candle sitting on your bench right now.

A quick, honest note from my workshop.
I've been meaning to do this for a while — and June is the month.
I'm running a Candle Making Workshop out of my home studio in Beachmere on either Wednesday 24th June or Saturday 27th June at 10am.
Small group. Hands-on. You'll make a candle and a wax melt with the fragrance you love most — and go home knowing how to make more. I throw in a grazing plate and a drink because making candles is better with food.
$79 per person. Everything supplied.

A little behind-the-scenes from someone who's been hand-pouring this stuff since 2020 🌿
