How to Create an Art Wall:
I will use fairly quiet and conventional paintings for this wall example. The wall can be of any style of course: modern, post-modern, classic and so forth.
1. Firstly, decide what theme you would like:
Start by considering the mood or story you want your art wall to tell. Do you want it to feel vibrant and energetic, calm and serene, or perhaps playful and eclectic? The type of room will often dictate a theme - a bedroom would be looking for a quieter feeling while a loungeroom or entryway may be more vibrant. A clear vision helps guide your choices.
2. Gather a Variety of Pieces
Pull together a selection of artworks—these can include paintings, prints, photographs, drawings, or even 3D objects. Don’t be afraid to mix mediums and sizes; variety adds interest. In this example there are only 2D artworks which can lend the wall the feeling of "being in the background". 3D objects will demand much more attention to the entire display.
3. Look for a Unifying Element
To keep the wall cohesive, choose a common thread. This could be:
A colour palette (e.g., warm tones, cool blues)
A subject matter (florals, landscapes, abstracts)
A style (modern, traditional, whimsical)
Consistent framing or matting - in this case all 2D works with black frames, all landscapes.
4. Balance Scale and Composition
Combine large statement pieces with smaller works. Place larger pieces towards the centre or at eye level, and fill in with smaller ones. Aim for a balanced distribution of colour and visual weight across the wall.
5. Play with Arrangement
Lay your pieces out on the floor or use paper templates on the wall to experiment with different layouts. Try both symmetrical (grid) and asymmetrical (salon-style) arrangements to see what feels best.
6. Edit and Refine
Step back and assess. Remove anything that feels out of place or overcrowds the arrangement. Sometimes less is more—leave space for the eye to rest.
Bonus Tips:
Include a personal or unexpected piece for character—a family photo, a travel memento, or a favourite quote.
Curating an art wall is about creating a visual conversation between the pieces. Trust your instincts and have fun with it.
