A huge thank you to Berowra Public School for inviting the preschool children for a craft morning. The children enjoyed going to "big-school" and participating in all the planned experiences.

Excited little voices filled the centre as a big red fire truck pulled into our driveway. After reluctantly packing away and getting a quick safety reminder, the children and staff headed out to the carpark where we were greeted by the Fire-Fighters from the local Berowra station.

The children learnt about and discussed some important, age appropriate fire safety points such as, what number to call in an emergency, never playing with fire, what to do should you hear a smoke alarm and how to stay safe around controlled fires like birthday candles, home fireplaces in the Winter and in recreational circumstances such as around campfires or barbecues.

Although, the highlight of the visit was of course when the children took turns spraying the fire hose! Everyone was fitted with the correct PPE as each child was given their own fire helmet before patiently waiting their turn. The children’s faces lit up with joy as they gave the next-door neighbours front lawn a nice long water…we even had a few cheeky wobbles of the hose splashing some of our educators!

As the Fire truck departed, sirens could be heard over the sea of “bye”s and “thank you”s from our very excited and very grateful children.

The Bumble Bees children and staff alike are very thankful to the amazing Fire-Fighters who took time out of their busy day to provide the children such a wonderful experience that was not only educational, but very engaging!

This is a great read !

We always knew the outdoor environment we provide for our children was important to their learning and developmental journey. They have freedom to create make and bake, touch feel and dig. The children love dirt ! Have you seen our mud kitchen ???

As it turns out, the natural environment also may have interactions with the development of immunity.

Playing through the greenery and litter of a mini forest's undergrowth for just one month may be enough to change a child's immune system, according to a small new experiment.

If you missed this on ABC, check it out in iview…. Wow ! Just wow !!!

We are so proud of the wonderful food Robyn prepares for the children everyday.

Is ultra-processed food causing obesity in children, and could it even be addictive? Dr Chris van Tulleken investigates as he undergoes an experiment that shocks the scientists.

Motherhood restructures the brain...... brains are profoundly altered by the transition to motherhood..... 😲

We see an impact of motherhood in the brains of women in their 70s and 80s – three or more decades after they became mothers!

Learning through play - what does it mean?

Our philosophy is based on learning through play. You might have heard us use this term before. As trained educators we know what this means, though after a conversation with a parent recently we thought it worth discussing the topic with you in more detail.

We have a fantastic transition to school program for our school leavers, which is in addition to the learning we are about to discuss.

What your children are "learning" and developing in our early childhood setting, from the day they arrive are muscle movements designed to develop their brains and bodies.
Muscle tone & strength, cognitive skills such as spatial awareness, pattern and other recognition skills, fine motor skills and the development of the muscles in their hands, Social skills, confidently thriving in both individual play and group settings as well as empathy and eating as part of a group.

When a child is "playing" the activities and play resources we make available are very carefully selected to develop these essential skills and these are all essential skills needed for learning at school and other functions in life.

Feedback from school teachers of the current generation of school starters is that they lack upper body strength, which can relate to a technology dependent generation and a lack of experiences that we may call "risky play". Remember as a child when you used to climb trees ?

As a generation of parents, love for our children and wanting to protect them often sees us discourage these risky behaviours. So we need to find other ways for our children to build these upper body muscles - our programs are working on developing and enhancing all these functions while the children play.

The children do not have access to electronic devices at our service, noisy flashy battery operated toys are avoided in favour of resources that are inspired by nature.
