As we close in on the Tasmanian Craft Fair for our 2nd year running, I thought it was time to answer a question I am asked all the time!!
"Where did you learn to do this"....
15 years ago as a 20 year old, I was lucky enough to meet a family that has definitly left their mark on my life.
Through a few health issues, I spent many days with Brad Hingston & Tammy Hingston - A completely random friendship!
Brad spent many many hours in his shed teaching me how to make pens on his lathe.
We evolved from some rubbish pine, to furnature offcuts and into experimenting on antler and acrylic. Soon after, I was addicted!
We turned a little hobby into a small business called "Fiddley Bitz Turning" I can still remember the day in there loungeroom making the name.
Before we knew it we were providing Birchalls Launceston with monthly pen orders (pic atrached of our 1st ever Birchalls order).
We had a lot of fun making pens together, and I 100% owe the passion to Brad.
As life goes on, we went our own ways as you do.
But pen making has stuck with me for the past decade. Its been an outlet for me that has been there through all of lifes challanges, something I can zone out with, be proud of, and enjoy.
Eventually Kilburn Ink was born - Thanks to this goes to 2 great friends Hannah Smith & Josh Smith - with Hannah coming up withe the name and both of these great people pushing me to take my hobby into a business.
Although life goes on, people move, and we lose touch, everytime the lathe spins these wonderful memories flood back.
I now get to share this passion with my beautoful and incredibly supportive wife Kadesha Rootes. Prep for the craft fair has been a 6 month period of work, with Desh having to take on alot more home duties and work at our property so that I can dedicate time in the shed to build stock.
One day, I will pass the skills Ive learnt onto our son, and I cant wait to see him make his 1st pen.
Pen making to me is more than a hobby, Its friends, family and love.
My pens have signed wedding certificates, Settlement contracts for 1st homes, been gifted & enjoyed world wide and more recently brought a smile to a elderly man who passed away 7 months later after our 1st craft fair.
I am incredibly proud to share my work with you, and cant wait for this week ahead πβ₯οΈ
