Melbourne Design Week is coming to an end! It's been an exciting week bringing together designers, makers, thinkers, and creative businesses across exhibitions, talks, tours, launches & workshops - all exploring how design can shape the way we live.

For me, attending events like this isn’t just about seeing beautiful things - although this week there’s been heaps of inspiration!

It’s about staying curious. Seeing what’s emerging and discovering fresh new talent. Finding exciting materials, furniture, lighting, finishes and ideas that may one day become the perfect detail to use in a client’s home.

As an interior designer, I think it’s so important to keep looking beyond what’s familiar. Design is always evolving, and the more I see, learn and experience, the more inspiration I can bring back to my clients' homes - whether I’m designing a full renovation, or guiding someone through their own DIY design decisions.

Because creating a beautiful home isn’t about following new trends! It’s about knowing what’s possible, then editing ideas into timeless, personal interiors that feel right for the way you live in your home.

Feeling sooo inspired after a week immersed in design, creativity and clever new ideas! Enjoy my highlights..

Win The DIY Design Your Dream Home System.
https://m.me/susiemilesdesign?ref=contest-june-2026

You do not need more Pinterest boards.
You do not need 47 more opinions about paint colours.
And you do not need to keep second-guessing every design decision.

What you need is a clear process to help your ideas work together.

Hi, I’m Susie Miles.

I’ve spent more than 20 years helping clients design beautiful homes.

And while I love working privately with clients, I also know not everyone can hire an interior designer.

That is exactly why I created The DIY Design Your Dream Home System.

I wanted to take the same clear process I use with my own clients and turn it into a step-by-step system everyday homeowners can follow for themselves.

It gives you access to my design process, so you can make clearer decisions, avoid costly mistakes, and create a home that feels beautifully pulled together.

Why the giveaway? Simple.

I believe a beautiful, well-designed home should not only be available to people with a designer budget.

So, to celebrate the launch of The DIY Design Your Dream Home System, I’m giving away one place for free.

No catch.

Just a chance to help more people discover that with the right process, they can design a home they truly love.

How to Choose the Right Rug?

Fun fact: Here’s something quirky about me.. I have an obsession with rugs and love how they can instantly transform a room.
Rugs add so many design elements to a floor in a living space: colour, pattern, texture and of course shape.

For our coastal project at Main Ridge, Victoria we had gorgeous expansive views onto the bush and bay beyond and our client needed rugs for a few areas.
He wanted to bring in the earthy abstract tones and shapes from the landscape outside. Take a look at what we came up with!

Here’s what we always consider before choosing rugs:

1.Colour is one of the main design elements of a home that pulls an interior together, especially when it comes to living areas

2. A rug should be the start of your colour scheme in a living area because it’s the biggest block of colour and the rest of your room colour scheme needs to work around it.

3. A great rug has light, medium & dark tones so you can work anything in the room back to it.
This basic rule applies to most rugs, and we are always spoiled for choice with the stunning designs available

4. If you already have a room full of loose furniture pieces sitting on the floor unrelated to each other, the right rug needs to have colours that work in with your furniture colours

5. If there’s already a few colours competing in your living area, a monochromatic rug in tones of the one colour, will work best

6. My last tip: Rug size - Large pieces of furniture like sofas need to sit fully or half on the rug. This connects your furniture to the living space so it feels unified

What colours will you have in your rug?

KITCHEN + ROBE

I don’t usually talk about Kitchens and Walk-in Robes in the same sentence, but when it comes to solutions for maximising space and creating functionality in kitchens and robes I can't get past !

As a designer, it's super important to stay on top of the latest in automation and smart storage solutions and I couldn't get enough of the latest automations on offer when I paid a visit recently to the Hafele Showroom with other designers.

For Kitchens, there’s everything from:
- Maximising blind corners with slide-out shelves to..
- Hands-free opening of waste bins with electric door openers
- Sliding benchtop runners to create extra bench space that magically disappears when not in use and..
- Clever slide-out storage solutions for awkward leftover cabinetry space in the kitchen
- Pop up phone charging from your kitchen bench and more..

Every single situation you may encounter when designing a kitchen has been thought of. Oh and there's swoon-over wardrobe solutions for shoes, shoes and more shoes!

Here's a taste of what's possible..

🏠 If you’d love support to confidently create your dream kitchen, robe or any other space in your home comment “30 Min” and I’ll be in touch to book you in for a FREE 30 minute discovery call!

Sandringham House has been a project that’s evolving over time.

Not rushed but intentionally layered as each decision is built on the last. From our early planning stages, the focus was always on creating a functional family home that felt inspiring and easy to live in day to day.

From stripping back old yellowed Baltic floorboards to reveal warm, peachy tones, we moved away from the idea of the existing all-white colour scheme and introduced a bolder palette of minty greens, deep teals, cinnamon and cream, in a mix of paint colours, fabrics & finishes that work together in harmony.

Materials have played a big role in bringing depth into the spaces. Natural textures including tumbled travertine, marble and brushed brass, together with layered fabrics like the linen sheers are making their impact! All chosen with purpose so the home feels lived in, not styled.

As with all good design, the palette starts from the ground up. Flooring, paint, cabinetry, and key finishes helped guide the direction with colours flowing from room to room.

There’s an ease to this home now that our clients love walking into. Elegant in a way that’s quiet and practical. A reminder that the best interiors aren’t created all at once. They come together step-by-step over time! 🤍
