WHAT IS FELT?
A quick explanation of what felt actually is, and how it is made. If you have any questions, feel free to ask on this post, or PM me. Always happy to discuss the process!
In my art felt pieces on this page, I will use one of these methods, often combining wet and needle felting, and very occasionally, all three!
WET FELTING
Possibly the earliest form of textile construction, wet felting is made using a combination of natural fibres (synthetic fibres may be used for embellishments, but will not felt on their own) water, a surfactant and agitation.
So essentially, lots of soap, water, rubbing and rolling to make the fibres integrate into each other, creating a strong, thick fabric that can be shaped around a resist or freehand to create hats, scarves, boots, etc.
NUNO FELTING
A very strong and light weight fabric comprised of the wet felting method, but instead, using thinner layers of wool, worked to integrate into a woven fabric, such as cotton, cheesecloth, silk or, occasionally rayon. This results in a very thin but sturdy fabric.
NEEDLE FELTING
This is a newer form of felting, using a barbed needle to entangle fibres and tighten them into the shape desired shapes and textures. Smooth, tight surfaces can be achieved, as can fluffy or "wooly" textures. Commonly used for small toys.
