A question we get asked often is: Can the seagrass rug handle pets, kids, spilled wine, food, etc. The answer is yes, the Seagrass rug can handle life. It works well in high traffic areas, under dining tables, in homes with kids, pets and frequent parties. 

One of the our favourite things about the Seagrass rug is that despite being hand made of natural materials, it’s not fussy. The seagrass has a natural layer of wax, which means it can handle spills and stains and it can also be hosed down if necessary (though it needs to be dried thoroughly after). It’s very sturdy and can handle furniture, foot traffic and the demands of real homes.

This hand blown mini glass vase has been a source of wonder and joy. As the light moves and shifts through the day, it gets trapped in all the grooves and gets reflected back differently. The best objects keep on giving even when you have stopped noticing them

Last week I travelled to Melbourne for Decor + Design, where I spent 3 days listening, looking and connecting with the design industry. A few things caught my attention, confirmed what we’ve been building and left me thinking about next steps.

I was inspired and encouraged by GREG NATALE as he spoke about the evolution of his work over 25 years. There is something powerful about seeing someone whose career you have admired from a distance, in real life, in the same room, speaking about the same questions and thoughts that occupy all of us working in design. Barriers get broken and possibilities become tangible.

Later James Treble and Lucy Sutherland generously shared their observations and trends report from Milan Design Week. A lot was shared but this slide resonated deeply. These are the ideas Ochre and Silk has been built around and hearing them reflected back as part of a wider movement felt deeply validating. My second thought was: how do we make the most of it 😉

These wall lights by Ember were formed from casts of the artist’s own elbow. A familiar part of the body made sculptural and functional. Exactly the type of detail I remember long after leaving an exhibition. They were presented as part of the VIVID Emerging Designer Awards.

I also kept returning to the student lounge. Models, experiments and ideas still forming. Established careers tell us what is possible. Emerging designers show us what might happen next. Huge thanks to Dina Kalpouzos & Dina Kalpouzos for great conversations and making me feeling really welcome and to Temple & Webster for the conversation pit of dreams.

I left Melbourne feeling more connected and more certain that we are here at the right time, for the right reasons. We just need to communicate our why much more clearly.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been finding this platform a bit overwhelming lately. We are not about trends, fast turnarounds or constantly producing new content. We love spaces that are created intentionally, layered over time, with objects that are made by hand, using natural materials… so rather than trying to catch up with a machine that’s always wanting more, we are taking some time out to figure out the best way to connect and share. We are still here, still available for any questions or queries. Just a bit more quiet.
