This morning as I was sweeping the front, I heard a little boy passing through tell his mum my broom looked so old fashioned, and that he’s never seen anything like it. And I told him he’s right, it is. My grandmother used to have one.

Thinking of my paternal grandmother, Senobar, warmed my heart and I’ve had a big smile on my face since. In a small way, I feel like I’m keeping her memory and her ways alive today. She was a farmer, a weaver, a gardener and so much more.

I’ve been asked why I open the showroom myself every Saturday rather than have team members do it. I have a few reasons but the main one is that I want to connect and get to know our customers. These interactions are such a source of inspiration and joy for me. One day, this will no longer be practical so I plan to enjoy it for as long as I can.

Ochre & Silk Artist Spotlight: BUDDE BUDDE | Meike & Johannes

The next in our series sharing artists, makers and designers whose work stays with us.

Founded in 2020 by Johannes Budde and Meike Papenfuss, BUDDE is a German design studio working across furniture, objects and spatial design.

What I love most about their work is the thoughtfulness held within each piece. The designs appear minimalist, almost quiet, but each contains a moment of awe, something unexpected that makes you pause and look again.

Concrete is draped as though it were soft. A sheet of steel is folded with the delicacy and movement of a paper fan. A lampshade pivots around a glass sphere, inviting you to play with the direction and atmosphere of the light. A rug rises from the floor over an aluminium structure to become a sculptural chaise lounge.

These are not passive objects. They invite touch, interaction and exploration. You don’t simply encounter them; you want to understand how they work and get to know them.

There is a beautiful tension in BUDDE’s work. The pieces are simple in their presentation, yet incredibly complex in their conception and ex*****on. Every material, movement and detail feels purposeful.

I first came across the RUG’N ROLL concrete stool years ago, and it feels as fresh to me today as it did then. It can sit comfortably within the spareness of a studio or alongside more ornate objects. It’s quiet enough to belong in many different interiors, yet distinctive enough never to disappear.

That, to me, is what makes BUDDE’s work feel timeless.
