Traditional Bhutanese Mandala with A White Tara As The Main Figure
Tara (Sanskrit: तारा, tārā; Standard Tibetan: སྒྲོལ་མ, dölma), Ārya Tārā (Noble Tara), also known as Jetsün Dölma (Tibetan: rje btsun sgrol ma, meaning: "venerable mother of liberation"), is an important figure in Buddhism, especially revered in Vajrayana Buddhism and Mahayana Buddhism. She appears as a female bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism and is considered to be the consort or shakti (power) of Avalokiteshvara. Tārā is also known as a saviouress who hears the cries of beings in samsāra and saves them from worldly and spiritual danger.

A woman weaving Yathra (wool) piece in central Bhutan. The wool is traditionally hand-spun, hand-dyed and hand-woven. Yak wool is used often, but due to the declining yak population in the Himalayas, sheep wool is more common nowadays. When yak wool is used, it is taken only from the soft part under the belly, as the wool from the rest of the body is very coarse, and only suitable to wave tents.

A woman weaving silk kishuthara on a backstrap loom in Eastern Bhutan.

Weaving is a very hard work in general, it requires sitting in the same position for long hours. However, weaving silk is even harder, because the weavers have to deal with very thin threads and very intricate designs.

The backstrap loom makes the process even harder, as the weaver needs to sit on the floor, engage the loom mechanism by placing a leather strap behind their back and push away from the loom set.

Most weavers work outside when the weather permits, as the houses aren’t well lit, and the weave for an average of 8-10 hours a day.
