We’re seriously worried about a spike in motorists crashing into those little green electrical pillar boxes you see in areas with underground power.
In the past year, we’ve been called to nearly 90 incidents where vehicles have hit pillar boxes, exposing live electrical hazards. This can make a vehicle that strikes it ‘live’ and can severely injure or kill anyone who comes into contact with a damaged pillar. So, what can you do?

👉 If you do bump into a pillar box, STAY IN THE VEHICLE. If it’s safe to do so, drive AT LEAST 10M AWAY and CALL US on 13 19 62. If your vehicle’s stuck on the pillar box, there’s a high probability the outside of it is live with electricity: STAY completely in the vehicle, CALL 000, and WAIT until we confirm it’s safe to get out.
👉 Bystanders: never approach a vehicle that’s hit electrical equipment. It’s not just the vehicle that can be live, but also the ground for up to 10m around it.
👉 Spotted a damaged pillar? Tell us ASAP – call 13 19 62.

FYI

Twenty hours of TV binge-watching, charging your phone for a year, or 18km worth of charge for an electric vehicle: these are all what you get for around $1 worth of electricity. As the mercury drops, our use of powered heating appliances tends to climb, but do you know what they cost to run?
National data helps spell out what $1 worth of power buys you: two hours of running a reverse cycle aircon at 20deg, 15mins of water heating for a hot shower, and a load or two of washing in the dryer. https://bit.ly/3pdqzmG

According to NRMA Insurance, faulty electrical appliances cause nearly 40 per cent of all house fires.

🔥 Make sure you’re not overloading your power boards and make sure they have surge protection. Never plug one power board into another power board.
🔥 Look for any loose-fitting plugs, and frayed or damaged cords.
🔥 Avoid plugging high wattage appliances into a power board.

These are a few simple things you can do to make your home safer. For more tips on keeping your home safe, check out NRMA’s first Saturday campaign https://www.nrma.com.au/firstsaturday

A bare pole is a safe pole 👌. People who illegally attach campaign placards or signs for garage sales, lost pets or any other advertising to poles place themselves at risk of electric shock, compromise the safety of our teams, and face hefty penalties under the Electricity Act 1994 (section 230, if you’re particularly keen 😬).
It’s also a waste of resources when our crews have to go out and remove unauthorised signage - please find another way to promote your cause. 🙌👏👍

It’s getting hot!

As an electrician in Queensland you’ll most likely be working in high temperatures, especially if you’re working in a ceiling space or outside.

Make sure you look after yourself and your mates at work by drinking plenty of water and taking regular breaks. Also ensure you know the warning signs of heat stress such as heat rash, heat cramps, dizziness and fainting.
