SCArt was originally formed in 1966 by Coast artists who wanted to meet regularly to discuss their paintings and as a result started to exhibit annually their works in the CWA Hall in Maroochydore. In 1967 other disciplines were added, such as sculpture, weaving and jewellery. DeVere Gallery which was located next door to the Maroochydore Library was opened in 1975 and SCArt moved there and considered it their home club premises. In 1981 the Minister for Primary Industry and Member for Landsborough, Mike Ahern, opened the workshop at Buderim after many fund raising events, a free lease of land from the Council and a grant from the State Government. This was the present day Pottery workshop and in 1983 a kiln was purchased and renovations were carried out to enlarge the area. In 1994 another workshop was built which presently houses the Art room. Today, SC Art Group attracts a variety of interests (painting, life drawing, pottery, sewing and music) so that there is some activity happening in the studios almost every day. SCArt is also successful in renting out the rooms to the general community when the members are not using them. We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of this land – the Gubbi Gubbi people and recognise their continuing connection to the land, waters and culture. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
