Our Service Department carries out maintenance, cleaning and services to evaporative air-conditioners, all types of reverse cycle air-conditioners, gas log heaters, ducted gas systems, portable gas heaters and wood heaters. We also carry out Warranty Repairs on all the brands we sell and complete Insurance Repairs on most units.

What is Creosote? (And Why Your Fireplace Needs to Stay Clear of It) 🪵🔥

If you have a wood-burning fireplace, creosote is something you definitely want to keep on your radar!

What is it?
When wood burns, it releases smoke, gases, and unburnt tar particles. As these gases travel up your cool chimney flue, they condense and leave behind a dark, sticky, or crusty buildup known as creosote.

Why is it dangerous?
Fire Hazard: Creosote is highly flammable. If allowed to build up, a stray spark or high heat can ignite it, leading to dangerous chimney fires.

Poor Airflow & Smoke: Heavy buildup restricts airflow, forcing smoke and harmful gases (like carbon monoxide) back into your living room.

Difficult to Remove: Over time, soft soot transforms into a hard, glossy "glazed" creosote that requires professional tools to remove safely.

How to prevent excessive buildup:

Burn Seasoned Hardwood: Always burn dry, well-seasoned wood with low moisture content. Wet or green wood produces far more smoke and creosote.

Maintain Good Airflow: Avoid letting fires smolder on low air settings for extended periods.

Schedule Annual Sweeps: Have your flue and chimney inspected and cleaned by a professional at least once a year.
