Studio Black Interiors is a boutique interior design studio, specialising in residential design.

In our Weetangra project, linear brickwork was used to bring texture into the interior without adding another colour or competing material.

The long, narrow format creates a subtle horizontal line that draws the eye through the home, while the soft, tonal finish sits quietly alongside the timber joinery and polished concrete flooring.

It’s a good example of why material selection is about more than choosing finishes you like individually.

The scale, format, texture and relationship between materials all influence how a space feels. Sometimes the most effective design decisions are the subtle ones.

Clever joinery that grows with your family. In our Reid Residence, we designed a built-in desk alongside the robe joinery, creating a practical, cohesive zone for homework, reading, or displaying treasured keepsakes.

Thoughtful design makes even the smallest spaces work harder.

Our Weetangera project layers white joinery with soft oak cabinetry, warm brass accents and lightly veined stone. The polished concrete floor grounds the space, adding warmth, texture and durability.

A restrained palette, thoughtfully detailed, that speaks to a more understated kind of luxury.

Tone-on-tone bathrooms can look simple at first glance. But when there’s very little colour variation, every other detail becomes more important.

For our Reid ensuite, soft, warm tones run through the tiles, stone and joinery, creating a calm backdrop for the details to do the work.

The interest comes from variation in form rather than colour.

A mix of tile shapes, gentle curves, subtle joinery detailing and understated fixtures adds depth without interrupting the simplicity of the scheme.

Lighting was equally important. Warm, ambient light softens the finishes and brings out the subtle variation in the materials.

It’s a quiet approach to bathroom design, but not a simple one.

When the palette is restrained, the details matter more.

For our Kingston Foreshore project, the starting point for the kitchen was the stone.

We were drawn to this emerald quartzite for its depth of colour and natural variation.

No two areas are quite the same, with layers of green, soft veining and subtle changes in tone.

The rest of the kitchen was kept warm and restrained. Timber joinery and aged bronze details allow the quartzite to be the hero, while adding warmth and depth around it.

I love the way the stone changes with the light and feels completely at home against the greens of the surrounding landscape.

Stone really does have the ability to set the entire direction of a room.

For our Malua Bay beach house we created bathrooms inspired by the soft, natural palette of the beach - warm sandy tones, light textures, and organic materials that capture the calmness of the ocean and the effortless beauty of coastal living.

Every detail was chosen to evoke a sense of serenity, lightness, and connection to nature. A space to slow down, unwind, and feel completely at ease.

Kingston Foreshore | Bathroom + Laundry. A complete rethink of two small, hardworking spaces.

The original bathroom and laundry were dated and lacked storage and functionality. The new design makes much better use of the existing footprint, while creating a sense of calm and continuity between the two spaces.

Warm timber joinery is paired with Japanese mosaic tiles, emerald quartzite natural stone and brass fixtures.

In the bathroom, a curved fluted-glass shower screen softens the space, while a continuous stone ledge provides practical storage and connects the different elements of the room.

In the new laundry zone, full-height joinery conceals the washing machine and a pull-out drying rack, with additional storage above and below.

The same timber, stone, tiles and brass finishes continue through, making the laundry feel like an extension of the bathroom rather than a purely utilitarian space.

Small spaces, but a lot of considered detail.
