Can a small bead really change the course of a battle?

During the early medieval period, belief in the magical power of stones and glass amulets was widespread, especially among the Anglo-Saxons and Germanic tribes. Scholars believe that the custom of carrying such amulets with swords began in the East and spread west with the Huns.

According to historian Ewart Oakeshott, sword beads; referred to as “life stones” in Norse sagas—were part of sword fittings. Archaeologists believe they were carried in small leather bags attached to the scabbard or tied to the hilt with a leather cord.

These beads were thought to heal wounds caused by the very sword they adorned and to bring luck and victory in battle.

They were made from materials like amber, agate, chalcedony, amethyst, faceted rock crystal, glass, chalk, sepiolite, steatite, or magnesite. In some cases, a gold or silver coin, mounted as a pendant, served the same talismanic function.
