Electrifying a major Pilbara operation requires proven heavy-haul equipment, enormous amounts of reliable electricity, charging infrastructure capable of supporting an entire fleet, transmission and generation capacity, and a system that can operate continuously without bringing production to a halt.
BHP and Rio Tinto currently describe their battery-electric haul truck work in the Pilbara as proof-of-concept trials, including testing range, energy use, charging performance, reliability, safety and productivity.
Mining companies adopt technology when it can do the job safely, reliably and competitively at scale.
Activists declaring the problem solved before the technology has proved itself will not make that happen any faster.
Australia should be encouraging miners to trial and develop these technologies, not pretending that a small number of trucks overseas demonstrates that an entire Pilbara mining system can be electrified tomorrow.
You cannot electrify the Pilbara with a spreadsheet. One truck does not make a mine fleet, and a truck operating at a Chinese or Mongolian mine does not prove that hundreds of ultra-class haul trucks can operate around the clock in Pilbara conditions. The industry is testing the technology because the technology is not yet proven at that scale.
