Handweavers and Spinners Guild of Victoria Our aim is to keep alive the ancient crafts of spinning, weaving, dyeing and allied crafts All Ashford equipment can also be bought through the craft outlet.

The Guild seeks to help and encourage their members to increase their knowledge, understanding and skills in these crafts through discussion, demonstration, exhibition, teaching and the provision of resource materials. Our premises at 655 Nicholson St, Carlton North are open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 3pm. You can contact the guild on +61 3 9387 9222 or by email at [email protected]

We have a wonderful gallery filled with items hand-crafted by guild members. Our craft outlet stocks a very broad range of supplies, including fleeces, fibres, books, dyes and equipment. Our library of over 2000 items is an incredible resource for the use of members. The exhibition space is available to groups and individuals interested in showcasing their skills. Membership of the guild gives many benefits, including our monthly newsletter, Treadles, access to borrowing from the library, discounts on classes, workshops and courses, access to the gallery for sale of articles and skeins and the opportunity to interact with like-minded inspirational people. If you would like to join the guild, just ring or visit during opening hours, or go to the website for an application form

This is going to be a fun class! Your tutor, Jan Brown, has been an enthusiastic dyer and spinner for nearly 50 years, with a background in industrial chemistry. She will take you through easy frypan and jar dyeing for colourful braids and skeins for spinning and knitting projects. There will be time to dye multiple braids for projects or spinning classes!

From colourful Japanese Temari balls and decorative braided stars to delicate lace gifts, handcrafted buttons and wet-felted Christmas decorations, there's something to inspire every maker.

The Rigid Heddle Weavers Group will be meeting tomorrow from midday to 3pm. Bring your current project, or one in the planning stages, to enjoy a bit of weaving, a bit of socialising, and time with a group of really cool weavers.

Students from the recent Rigid Heddle Courses are really encouraged to come along and continue their weaving practice!

We have photos from our most recent Introduction to Rigid Heddle Weaving classes, and they are something special. This post is a combination of in progress, completed work and students' personally designed projects (after only two weeks weaving!) .

Now, we donโ€™t have another Introduction to Rigid Heddle Weaving class scheduled this year, but it will be running again early next year. It is a great introduction to weaving as it is simple but versatile. Great for people who want a no-frills weaving experience, experimenters, knitters and spinners branching out into weaving, young weavers, and people with small spaces.

Especially exciting is that the Guild has an all-new set of folding looms especially for this class, which students can borrow to use and weave at home.

The upcoming Introduction to Spinning 5-week course has places available for up and coming spinners ๐ŸŽ‰ Kicking off on Saturday 31st October, this class is for complete beginners. In the space of 5 Saturdays, your teacher, Carmel Hanna, will take you from setting up a wheel to being able to confidently spin with different fibres.
