One of the most repetitive things I see in high-end renovations is assuming that designing for resale means making everything bland.

It doesn’t.

You can absolutely create a home that feels personal, distinctive and completely right for the way you live, without making decisions that only make sense to you.

The trick is knowing where to personalise and where to be strategic.

I’m thinking about things like the floor plan, natural light, storage, kitchen functionality, quality of materials and the way spaces connect. These are the decisions that future buyers notice, even if they can’t articulate why the house feels right.

Then you can bring your personality into the elements that are easier to change: colour, furniture, lighting, artwork, joinery details and styling.

Because you might never sell.

But life has a habit of changing the plan.

A renovation should give you the home you want now without quietly reducing your options later.

That’s not designing for the next buyer.

It’s designing for yourself and being smart.

In this concept design, we let the window and the view be the stars of the show.

The living room didn’t need anything more than one statement piece, a modular sofa, sourced from DeDeCe.

The pendant light from Coco Republic brings balance to the space. While your eye is naturally drawn to the view outside, the pendant invites you to pause and look up and appreciate the interior as well.

The Big Sur glass coffee table ties the scheme together, adding warmth through its tones.

Why can expensive homes still miss the mark?

Big spend doesn’t necessarily mean big vision, unless someone is looking at the project as a whole and leading the design.

I’ve seen homes where the fridge doors don’t open properly, soundproofing hasn’t been considered, or the lighting doesn’t create the atmosphere the space needs.

Builders execute what is drawn, and their expertise and practical knowledge are invaluable when it comes to how things are actually built.

Architects often focus on the bigger picture, while interior designers focus on the finer details of how a home works and feels. Both perspectives are important, and they need to work together.

Much of the value an interior designer brings is invisible. We ask questions you may not even know you need to consider — how a door opens, where the light falls, how people move through a space, where everyday items are stored, how rooms connect and how the home will actually be lived in.

A high-end home shouldn’t just look beautiful in the photos, it should work effortlessly. So that you’d feel your investment has been thoughtfully considered.

Walls can be like a big canvas.
Even when creating an airy space with white undertones, Venetian plaster and textures on the wall can add interest and texture. Another option is wallpaper, which can soften the room and also help reduce sound transmission.

Here, we’ve used green wallpaper to bring earthy tones into the living room.

1. Talk me through a normal weekday morning at home.

2. What is the one thing in your current home that drives you crazy?

3. Where do you normally gather and where do you wish you gathered more?

4. Where does everything go when you walk through the door?

5. What do you want your home to make easier for you?

Probably the biggest one is the ‘why’ behind the renovation. And who will benefit most from your Reno?

Questions like that uncover bottlenecks, storage needs, circulation and morning routines.

We can talk through recurring frustrations.
We can also understand how the family actually uses their/ and social spaces.

Put your walls to work. Display art and photos.
Despite a really tight floor space, we turned the two beds against opposite walls to free up just enough room for a bedside table and a cosy rug.

Don't forget baskets. They're perfect for storing toys and books.

The best decision? Creating a small study corner with a sit-stand desk for a growing schoolboy. It's a space that can easily adapt as he gets older.

When floor space is limited, your walls become your biggest asset. Use them for shelving, storage, and smart design solutions that make a small room feel bigger.

The best family homes eliminate friction from everyday life.
Where do teenagers gather without dominating the whole house?

They’re about cooking dinner while knowing who’s in the pool.

Being able to answer homework questions while unpacking groceries. Parents need places to take work calls.

Kids need places to be loud. In the kitchen are charging drawers hidden away.

Homework perch that doesn’t invade prep space.

Appliance access that children can use independently. Where does the school bag land without becoming visual clutter?

Where do wet swimmers go so they never make it to the bedroom?

Where can kids grab a snack without unpacking the entire pantry? Do you agree or disagree that these small questions have an impact on everyday life?

Some clients might wonder what interior designers actually do because so much of our work is invisible.
A beautiful home means very little if it feels frustrating to live in every day.
The real investment isn’t only beautiful finishes but it’s creating a home that feels finished, not just renovated. At the same time, it’s durable and functional for years to come.

We ask questions you didn’t know needed asking because we’re solving problems before they’re built.

Small functional decisions have a huge long-term impact — like joinery clearances, lighting placement, power points, storage access, appliance locations and circulation.

Styling at the end is the cherry on top of the cake. It’s beautiful, but it’s not the cake itself.

We’re looking for solutions from day one, so every decision supports the next.

When a client says, “I didn’t even know to think about that,” that’s usually the moment we’ve prevented an expensive mistake or created a better way for their family to live.

Our goal is less chaos, more ease, and a home that still works beautifully 10 years from now.
