Ali Troup has spent more than twenty years in the floristry world, working everywhere from Melbourne to London before settling into her studio at The Mill in Castlemaine.

She’s seen the industry up close, warts and all, and she doesn’t sugar-coat the reality that floristry is a significant polluter.

Half the flowers sold in Australia come from overseas, carrying massive carbon miles, heavy chemical treatments, and piles of unnecessary packaging.

On top of that, the tools of the trade are overwhelmingly plastic, from floral foam to glossy papers, ribbons, tapes and cellophane, with far too many florists simply tossing the lot into general waste without a second thought.

Handpicked was her answer to that problem – a sustainable alternative for customers who want beautiful arrangements without the environmental guilt, and a way to show the wider industry that there’s a better path.

Ali’s whole philosophy is about working with the environment rather than against it, proving that small, thoughtful changes aren’t just achievable, but essential if the industry wants a future.

Her approach is grounded in simple, practical habits. She avoids floral foam and other single-use plastics wherever possible, choosing Australian-grown flowers and favouring local, seasonal blooms.

Every arrangement is presented in compostable wrapping, with clever methods used to keep stems wet without relying on plastic bags or foam.

All green waste is separated for composting, with paper, glass, unavoidable plastics and general rubbish sorted properly so that whatever can be reused or recycled actually is.

And at every step, she works closely with local growers while helping customers understand why sustainable floristry matters.

It’s thoughtful, it’s practical, and it’s exactly the kind of shift that shows how a creative industry can thrive without trashing the planet.

Ali’s proving every day that ethical floristry isn’t a niche – it’s the direction the whole sector needs to move in! 💐

Again this Christmas, I'm making my handmade wreaths! I have a few options available to order online, or contact me directly to order yours.

My wreath bases are handmade using Castlemaine grown grape and wisteria vines. You can choose either naturally dried florals or fresh locally grown flowers and foliage, or a combo of the two! I use twine and my strong nimble fingers to add florals to my bases making my wreaths home compostable. I have the magnolia leaf and grass wreath available this year, and as I need to use wire to add the magnolia, these are best not composted at home (the wire of course will rust and break down but will take a lot longer to do so and so is not suitable for your home compost system).

Collection from my studio at The Mill Castlemaine and delivery to the Castlemaine area are available Tuesday to Friday. And this Wednesday the 10th I am doing a delivery run down to Gisborne, Macedon, Woodend and Kyneton. Castlemaine area customers can order via my online florist shop. Macedon Ranges folk can contact me directly, [email protected] or 0435457135.

And! wreaths are also available to buy from the Castlemaine Bazzaar!

I'm not on Facebook much, and have been pretty quiet on Instagram too (although that is still the best place to follow what I am doing). It has been a super busy time with the end of wedding season. Then Mother's Day. And in amongst it all Penny Ryan Photography and I have had an exhibition at Corner Store Merchants! This week is the last week you can see it, it closes on Saturday.

Called "Form", this collaborative exhibition between photographic artist Penny Ryan and floral artist Ali Troup was born from a shared love of collecting vintage vases. Ali’s floral arrangements explore three-dimensional space, while Penny’s photography transforms this into a two-dimensional interpretation.

Tapping into imagined histories and settings, these photographs celebrate the memories, rituals, function, and joy that the vessels may have held for previous custodians—each photograph reflecting its unique personality alongside the nostalgia and memories held by the viewer.

Selected prints are framed in Penny’s personal collection of vintage frames, a nod to the preciousness of objects and the personalities they hold. Inspired by the stories, the space, and the prints on display, Ali has created floral works that complement the photographs, reintroducing a three-dimensional element to the exhibition and continuing the conversation around form.

This Saturday I will be in store from about 11am until 1pm (maybe later?) to answer any questions you may have about the exhibition. About the flowers. About the vases. I will also have a small selection of vintage vases and beautiful locally grown florals for anyone wanting to immerse themselves more deeply in the exhibition.

Valentine's Day is Friday the 14th of February, and this year I've added a delivery run to the Woodend, Macedon and Kyneton areas. As it's extra distance, my medium bouquet of $80 is the minimum price point available, and I have a flat rate of $15 per delivery address to that area to help cover the extra costs of travel. My partner Ryan is on board and will hand deliver your florals. He's a sweetheart so the experience will fulfil all your expectations!

I've set up an online enquiry form for you Macedon Ranges customer's to enquire about the service, go to my website and click the "Enquire here" button on my Florist Shop page. Or email me [email protected] or call or text during business hours on 0435457135.

And of course I'll be delivering to the Castlemaine and surrounding areas normal.

As usual, I won't be doing the red rose thing due to the huge strain it puts on the industry, including the negative environmental impact that importing all those red roses into the country. So expect my usual experts crafted designs of locally grown seasonal florals.

I have started a fortnightly delivery service to the Woodend and Macedon area, stopping off in Kyneton on the way. I've been chuffed that people outside of Castlemaine have come to know and appreciate my unique floral design, and to ensure that this service is a sustainable one, I'm taking on more customers.

So, if you live or work in those areas and want expertly designed locally grown sustainable flowers delivered directly to you. Or you know someone who does. Get in touch!

One of my favourite weddings from the 2023/24 season was Sally and Ashley's at Mount Macedon Winery. They were focused on a low waste sustainable wedding, and so we were a match made in heaven! Photography by Smith and Archer Photography
