One step at a time…

Our staircase is finally ready to be unveiled.

When we bought our home, it was a late-1980s Tudor-style house with two internal staircases and a rarely used mezzanine area. As we began reimagining the spaces, we saw an opportunity to completely rethink how the levels connected.

We repositioned the staircase and built across the existing void where the mezzanine had been, transforming the layout and creating a much stronger connection between the spaces.

Like so much of our home, the staircase began with a sketch and a very clear vision — something fine and elegant, with a contemporary feel, that would sit quietly within the architecture rather than overpower it.

I designed the staircase, and my husband brought that design to life, carefully crafting each piece by hand.

Every detail has been considered. The timber treads feature a nosing that wraps around the edge to conceal the end grain, while the treads and risers are rebated so the glass sits neatly within the timber. The handrail has also been rebated to hold the glazing, creating the clean, seamless detail I was looking for.

I love the balance between the warmth of the timber and the crispness of the glass. The simplicity gives the staircase a sense of lightness and elegance, while the craftsmanship brings a warmth that makes it feel very much at home.

And perhaps what makes it most special is that, like so many elements throughout our home, it’s something we created together — I designed it, and my husband crafted it.

The skirting boards at the bottom of the staircase are still to be finished, but that’s real life when you’re renovating your own home — there’s always another detail to complete.

This is just a little glimpse into what we do on our weekends — dreaming, designing, building and crafting our home, piece by piece.

We’re slowly transforming what was once a late-1980s Tudor-style home into something that feels much more like us.

There’s still plenty to do, but it’s all coming together…

There are lots of beautiful details coming together in this one, with some carefully considered joinery and plenty of attention to the finer details.

What makes a kitchen award-worthy?

For me, it starts long before the finished photograph.

It starts with an idea, a sketch and a lot of problem solving.

This kitchen was the first space I redesigned in the home, and it became the catalyst for the design direction that followed throughout the house.

From the initial SketchUp drawings and material selections, to rethinking the existing space, working through the construction and finally seeing the cabinetry and details come together, every stage required careful consideration.

The existing kitchen had stepped gyprock and bulkheads that sat down to benchtop height. Rather than simply working around them, I saw an opportunity to rethink the space and create a more considered design.

The Tasmanian oak slatted island, concealed pantry, hardwearing stone and carefully considered details were all part of creating a kitchen that balances functionality, durability and aesthetics.

For me, award-worthy design isn’t about one beautiful element. It’s about how every decision works together.

Beyond the beautiful surface lies a kitchen designed with purpose.

For me, great design begins with the materials.

This kitchen was the first space I redesigned in the home and became the foundation for every design decision that followed. Each material was carefully selected to create a balance between functionality, durability and timeless aesthetics.

From the hardwearing engineered stone and natural timber detailing to the concealed appliances, soft curves and considered lighting, every element was chosen with intention. The result is a kitchen that not only performs beautifully for everyday living but also feels calm, refined and enduring.

I believe true luxury isn’t about excess - it’s about thoughtful design, quality materials and craftsmanship that will stand the test of time.

The kitchen was the very first space I redesigned in this home, and it became the foundation for everything that followed.

From that point on, every material, texture and finish was carefully considered to create a cohesive palette that flowed throughout the entire home.

For me, great design begins with the materials. I love combining hardwearing, stain-resistant engineered stone with the warmth and authenticity of natural timber. The vertical timber slatted detailing to the island introduces texture and character, balancing the refined surfaces while creating a timeless focal point.

Every selection served a purpose. Functionality and durability were just as important as aesthetics, ensuring this kitchen would perform beautifully for everyday living while maintaining its enduring appeal.

Lighting was another key consideration. Chosen for its generous scale and sculptural form, the rope pendants became a statement feature, introducing warmth and a relaxed coastal influence that perfectly complements the material palette.

Designing this kitchen was about far more than creating a beautiful room - it was about establishing a material language that would guide every design decision throughout the rest of the home.

I’m incredibly honoured that this project has been recognised as a Finalist in the 2026 KBDi Design Awards - Queensland Large Kitchen Category. It is a privilege to have this work acknowledged alongside so many talented designers.

Spent some time sourcing tiles for a client project at Surface Gallery last week and found plenty of inspiration along the way.

Their collection is beautifully curated and presented, making it a pleasure to explore different textures, tones and finishes while refining the material palette for this project.

There’s something special about seeing materials in person and watching a design vision begin to take shape. Thoughtfully selected materials are the foundation of creating spaces that feel authentic, layered and timeless.

These oversized pendants were the perfect choice for our KBDi finalist Raby Bay kitchen.

While the lights are positioned within the kitchen, their inspiration came from the vertical panelling feature I designed for the adjoining dining room. As a detail carried throughout the home, the panelling established a strong design language, and I wanted the lighting selection to reflect that same rhythm and verticality.

Crafted from woven cord with brass detailing, these statement pendants bring texture, warmth and personality to the space. Their playful silhouette, reminiscent of a Mad Hatter hat, creates a striking focal point while complementing the clean lines and architectural details beyond the kitchen.

It’s these connections between materials, form and design intent that help create a cohesive home where every element feels considered.
