Here’s what no one tells you when you’re clearing your parents’ home ….You’re suddenly standing in the middle of a lifetime of their belongings and it feels like every decision carries emotional weight.
But here’s the truth I wish more people heard:
You’re not expected to keep everything.
You’re allowed to choose what genuinely means something to you and let the rest go with care.
Letting things go doesn’t mean you’re being disrespectful.
It doesn’t mean you loved them any less.
It simply means you’re making thoughtful, compassionate decisions in a situation that is already incredibly hard.
Here’s a gentle reminder to help ease the guilt:
Your feelings are valid!
Clearing a home while grieving is a heavy emotional load. Feeling torn, overwhelmed or guilty is completely normal.
Keep the pieces that truly matter.
Choose the items that hold real memories or connection.
Let the rest continue their story.
That’s where I come in.
Allowing items to be loved and appreciated again. You’re honouring both your parents’ legacy and your own capacity.
Remember:
You can honour them without becoming the caretaker of everything they owned.
The memories stay with you - not in the number of boxes you carry home.
If you’re moving through this right now, you’re not alone AND I know you are doing your best - that’s all you can do at such a difficult time.
