It was an absolute privilege to be entrusted with the sanding, polishing and restoration of the original floorboards inside “GUNYAH”, the historic worker’s cottage from the Thomas Holt Estate in Sylvania, New South Wales.

Built around 1870, GUNYAH is believed to be the last remaining building from the historic Thomas Holt Estate and is one of the oldest surviving houses in the Sutherland Shire. To have the opportunity to work on a floor that has been part of this remarkable building’s history for more than 150 years was both an honour and a privilege.

My role was to carefully restore the original timber flooring while respecting the character, age and history of the building. Every stage of the process was carried out with great care to bring these beautiful old floorboards back to life while retaining their authentic heritage character.

A special mention must go to Freshbuilt Constructions, one of the Sutherland Shire’s elite building companies, who undertook the complete restoration of GUNYAH from top to bottom. Their workmanship and attention to detail throughout this project were exceptional.

Freshbuilt Constructions can also take credit for the impressive black gap filling throughout the original floorboards using Sika 11FC. The dark gap filling has created a striking contrast against the timber and has really made this 150-plus-year-old floor come alive, highlighting the character and craftsmanship of the original boards.

For the final finish, LOBA DUO water-based floor finish was selected to provide a beautiful, durable and contemporary protective coating while allowing the natural character of this historic timber to remain on display. Brett @ Loba Australasia LOBA On Top !

It was a tremendous honour to be selected as the flooring restoration contractor for the extensive heritage restoration of Government House Sydney—one of Australia’s most historically significant and prestigious residences. Completed in 1845 and nestled within the Royal Botanic Garden overlooking the spectacular Sydney Harbour, Government House has served as the official residence of the Governor of New South Wales for more than 180 years. Its rich history and architectural significance made this a truly unforgettable project to be part of.

Working with the original Pitch Pine floorboards, which have remarkably stood the test of time for over 180 years, was both a privilege and a responsibility. Seeing timber of this age still in such sound condition is a testament to the quality of the craftsmanship from a bygone era. My role was to carefully restore these magnificent floors while preserving their authenticity and historical character for generations to come.

The photographs showcase the transformation through a selection of before-and-after images, along with the traditional process of hand-applying the floor stain before completing the restoration with a premium hardwax oil finish. This finishing system was carefully chosen to enhance the natural beauty of the timber while providing long-lasting protection and allowing the floorboards to continue ageing gracefully.

Projects of this calibre demand patience, precision, and a deep respect for heritage craftsmanship. Being entrusted with the restoration of such an iconic Australian landmark is something I will always be immensely proud of. I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity and extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone involved for placing their confidence in my workmanship. It was an incredibly rewarding experience to help preserve a small but important part of Australia’s history.

It was a profound honour to be selected as the flooring contractor for the extensive heritage restoration of Government House, Sydney.

These photographs showcase the transformation of the downstairs chalet, a prestigious residence reserved for foreign dignitaries, VIPs, and vice-regal staff.

Built in 1890, the chalet features its original Kauri pine floorboards. To preserve the building’s historical character, I meticulously sanded the original timber before custom staining the floorboards to a traditional Black Japan colour, carefully replicating the appearance believed to have existed when the building was first constructed. The restoration was completed with a premium hardwax oil finish, enhancing the natural beauty of the timber while providing a durable, elegant finish that honours the craftsmanship and heritage of this remarkable building.

Here are some before-and-after photographs from the heritage restoration project I had the privilege of completing at the Government House Chalet in Sydney.

I’ve also included a few photos of me applying the traditional water based floor stain ,a meticulous process that requires patience, experience, and attention to detail. It’s certainly not the easiest work, but seeing these beautiful heritage timber floors brought back to life makes every hour worthwhile.

Working on a building of such historical significance was a genuine honour, and I’m incredibly grateful to have been entrusted with helping preserve a small part of Australia’s architectural heritage.

Thank you to everyone involved for the opportunity. It is a project I’ll always be proud to have been part of.
