Helle Dyre Vaa — The King’s Knife

First introduced in 1978, the Helle Dyre Vaa is one of Helle’s most distinctive Scandinavian fixed blades, combining a long sweeping trailing-point profile with polished steel, brass fittings, natural timber and traditional leatherwork.

Its history is particularly unusual. King Olav V of Norway famously used a Dyre Vaa to cut the ribbon opening the first winter road across Strynefjellet, earning the model the nickname “The King’s Knife.”

For 2026, Helle revived the Dyre Vaa in a limited run of 500 knives across several variations, commemorating King Harald V’s visit to Helle’s home region. One of the new knives was also presented to the King, continuing its royal connection.

Helle itself was founded in 1932 by brothers Steinar and Sigmund Helle in Holmedal, on Norway’s west coast, where the company still produces its knives today with significant hand finishing.

The modern Dyre Vaa retains the character of the original, featuring a long polished triple-laminated stainless-steel blade with a traditional Scandi grind, substantial brass furniture and handle options including curly birch and dark Kebony.

Each knife is paired with a traditional leather sheath shaped around the dramatic curve of the blade.

More than simply a hunting knife, the Dyre Vaa represents a distinctly Norwegian approach to knife making: practical enough for the outdoors, yet crafted with enough character and detail to feel almost ceremonial.
