Leanne Argent, an extremely talented illustrator and a client of mine, was kind enough to drop off a couple of copies of her latest book yesterday. I photographed her artwork for the project a while back and it was nice to finally see the finished product. My younger kids really enjoyed the book too. It was written by Kerrie Uren, published by Starfish Bay, and should be available at all good book retailers.

I've been meaning to frame this piece by lovely and extremely talented mother and daughter duo Yola & Daria, two of my oldest and dearest clients, for far too long. They've been with me since I was working from home in Belgrave, before I even had a shop, and they generously gifted me this incredible paper-cut collage last year. Sadly a pic on Facebook is unlikely to do justice to the detail in this piece but it'll be displayed proudly in my studio.

The piece is box-framed using offcuts of the backing board as spacers.

Late again, I know. I'd been putting off the newsletter because I hoped to write about a project I've been working on, but sadly that'll have to wait for the June newsletter which will probably come out sometime toward the end of August.

From the outset I should prefix my thoughts by saying I have no Indigenous heritage nor any particular expertise on the matter of Indigenous art, so the

A reproduction of an old illuminated address was printed on Canson Rag Photographique 310gsm paper and framed in Tasmanian Oak finished with beeswax. I might have been inclined to go with more of a traditional look for the frame to suit the era, but the client wanted something contemporary and I think the finished product works well.

It's nice when customers come up with new and interesting ideas for frames. This one is double-matted, but the second (red) mat is cut extremely thin so as to interact more with the moulding than the artwork, similar to the sort of look you'd get from using slips. The frame itself is finished with Indian ink and black wax and fitted with 99% UV-resistant reflection-control glass.

This was an interesting experiment - ebonizing stained timber. Ebonizing is done with a mixture of vinegar and rust, which reacts with the tanins in the timber to blacken it. Tasmanian oak isn't particularly high in tanins so I often coat it with black tea before I apply the ebonizing solution. In this case I didn't so more of the stained timber would show through.

It's not something I'd thought of doing before, but the client asked me to replicate the look of a prefab moulding he'd had other works framed with. We were both extremely pleased with the result. The frame is finished with dark polish and beeswax, and fitted with 99% UV-resistant reflection control glass.

Well, it’s only the second edition of the monthly newsletter and I’m already behind schedule. I’ve spent much of the past few weeks rebuilding my website

Carving a custom moulding from Tasmanian Oak. The flutes were carved with a Stanley #45 combination plane, while the outer bead was done with an antique beading plane. The end result was stained with a custom mix and finished with beeswax. Original painting by Hamish Fleming.
