The Land Does Not Read the Calendar — Part 4
Learn to Read Your Place

Who shares this place with you?

Watching the animals around us is one way to begin reading the land. Notice where they feed, where they rest and which places they return to.

Then look a little wider.

What is flowering? What birds can you hear? Is the ground dry or damp? What has changed since the last rain?

Start with what you can see. Write it down, take a photograph, and return another day. Over time, those small observations can become a record of your relationship with a place.

What animals have you been noticing where you live?

Some days there is energy for making. Some days, sitting beside the water is enough.

Take a moment to notice what you have capacity for today. Let that help you choose your pace.

🌿 Would you like a first look at the Earthcraft app?

I am looking for five people to try 'Living Medicine Wheel by Earthcraft' and give me some honest feedback.

It’s a space to connect with the land, notice what is turning around you, explore the Medicine Wheel and keep your own journal and observations.

You don’t need any technical skills or experience with the Medicine Wheel, just a little curiosity and a willingness to tell me what feels useful, what’s confusing and what could be clearer.

You can explore it from home, in your own time. I’ll send you access details and a simple guide to get started.

Interested? Send me a private message and let me know whether you use an Android phone or an iPhone. The app is only for android at present. Apple coming soon.**

I’d love your help shaping this next part of Earthcraft. 🌱

DURGA AND NAVARATRI
Strength and devotion

Navaratri begins on 11 October for many Hindu communities in Australia. Its name means nine nights, a period devoted to the feminine divine.

Some traditions honour nine forms of Durga. Others devote the observance to Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati. Prayer, fasting and devotional music take different forms across families and regions.

Durga is revered as the Divine Mother, associated with strength and protection. Her victory over Mahishasura, the buffalo demon, is one of the sacred stories remembered at this time.

These are living Hindu traditions, carried through homes, temples, stories and gatherings.

Learning about these traditions opens a question about how I meet difficulty in my own life.

Strength may appear in speaking clearly, protecting someone, asking for help, or continuing with a task that matters.

Where do you find the strength to care for what is important to you?

Warm wishes to everyone observing Navaratri.

The Land Does Not Read the Calendar — Part 3
The Calendar Came From Watching

Calendars can hold a relationship with the place where they are used.

Changes in light, rain, plants, animals and water can become ways of recognising the turning year. Publicly shared Indigenous seasonal calendars offer examples of knowledge that is specific to particular peoples and Country.

For Earthcraft, the invitation is to put observation beside our calendar.

What is changing in the place where you live?

What returns? What arrives earlier or later? Which signs do you recognise because you have watched them before?

Time can be counted, and it can also be witnessed.

Start with one place you can return to. Notice what changes there.

There is a quiet strength in choosing what you give your time and care to.

What are you welcoming into your life? What are you ready to put down?

You stay in control.

Spring is making itself known here in Australia.

Our spring equinox fell on 23 September. At the same moment, people in the Northern Hemisphere reached their autumn equinox.

These turning points carry different meanings across cultures. Some celebrations welcome new growth. Others make space for ancestral remembrance or gratitude for the harvest. Their names and dates belong to their own traditions.

Explore Ostara, Alban Eilir, Nowruz, Higan and Mabon, including which season each belongs to and the meaning behind the illustrations.

Then take a moment to notice the place where you live. What has changed since winter? What is beginning to grow in your own life?
