A lighthouse has served multiple purposes over the years, giving warning over time, yet it has essentially remained the same: to serve to warn of dangers like a rocky coastline, reefs, and shallow waters, and to guide ships safely into harbors, ports, and waterways. Light coming from a chain of lights and lenses in view over a range helps to be released; that's how a navigator might discern its location, route, speed, and possible danger. Beyond functional purpose, lighthouses have a place in maritime heritage and culture reflected in literature, arts, films, and also metaphors for guidance, hope, and hopefulness.
