I had the privilege of attending a workshop with Tim Heard from Sugarbag Bees learning more about native bees in the agricultural setting.

Pictured is Tim splitting a stingless native bee hive (Tetragonula carbonaria). I always love seeing their beautiful spiral brood.

Thank you Greater Sydney Local Land Services for organising this workshop!

This is what it looks like when a community comes together to achieve amazing things.

Today we built a nursery for solitary native bees in East Gosford Community Garden. The bottom section is for ground dwelling bees such as Blue Banded Bees and the top section is for Black Resin, Fire-tailed Resin, Leaf cutter, Masked and Reed Bees.

I particularly enjoyed seeing the kids involved. Thank you to everyone who came along to learn more about native bees.

Spring is a great time to set up a bee hotel. Join us Saturday 11am at the East Gosford Community Garden as we put together a bee hotel for the garden. We’ll be talking about local native bees, positioning and how to make your own bee hotel for your garden.

I’ll have a few bee hotels available for sale on the day.

Thank you Graham for installing the box ready for the drilled wood and bamboo!!

Spotted today is the Green Carpenter bee (Xylocopa aerata), a large metallic green solitary native bee. This is a female on a flowering Tea Tree bush. Carpenter bees get their common name as they borrow into soft wood for their nest.
