Originally a modest 1960s three-bedroom residence, this home has been reimagined as a five-bedroom plus study family home through our sensitive and expert interior architectural intervention. Our approach was to first identify the existing architectural ideas developed by original architect, Anthony Haydon. A floor plan that featured a central spine, strong modernist roofline and façade features and other details knitted within the building. Our approach was both to re-organise and introduced a series of spaces previously concealed and buried under the existing house. This produced space for two additional large bedrooms, a study and storage all linked via a new staircase that better connects the master suite with the children’s rooms, supported by integrated heating and cooling. An upgraded kitchen and bathroom, recycled jarrah floors, layered cabinetry and contemporary detailing bring warmth throughout.

Curved: Originally designed in 1966 by Bridge, Hayden & Associates, this home speaks in curves, a defining thread in our architectural language and a hallmark of 1960s architecture.

Sensitive to the original architectural intent our approach was to introduce circular skylights accessing natural light deep into the plan, while curved geometries are expressed through marble bench tops and nosings, circular bathroom mirrors and sculptural curved staircases. The result is a carefully considered transformation that has extended the life of this mid-century residence by anchoring it into the 21st Century.

Great Interior Architecture can change how people feel the moment they walk through the door - and in healthcare, that matters. My aim is to bring warmth to traditionally cold clinical environments and create spaces that feel calmer, more welcoming, and more human. These elements aren’t just decorative extras; they actively support patient wellbeing, reduce anxiety, and enhances the experience for both patients and practitioners.

Melbourne Children's Clinic - Softening a clinical shell. With polished concrete floors and an exposed services ceiling, this space started as a basic industrial shell. Our brief was to design a fit-out that soften the harsh surfaces while maximising the space for an efficient medical practice.

The ceiling was stripped back and painted black, allowing the mechanical systems to recede while giving the space additional height. On the polished concrete floor, we introduced a series of custom-designed rugs. Each rug, in addition to adding colour, assists with guiding movement within the ‘open plan’ and helps with defining dedicated play and waiting areas. They also add softness and acoustic comfort to the hard surfaces – moreover the rugs reinforce the strong curved geometry of the walls, furniture and central ‘pods’. Altogether, this brings warmth, comfort and visual calm to a busy medical environment, one that feels light, human and thoughtfully designed.

Melbourne Children’s Clinic - designing flow. Our client engaged us to provide a design for her new medical practice that would maximize the use of space. Starting with an empty shell, we designed nine consulting rooms around the periphery of the space leaving room for both views to the exterior garden and a serious of functional ‘pods’, allowing for the free flow of movement. These fabricated circular ‘pods’ create places to pause, work and connect. One ‘pod’ forms a feeding space; another becomes a write-up area, with desks for doctors to work without leaving the clinic or occupying space needed by others to see patients. Two full-height pods house a meeting room and a concealed storage space, each topped with lush green plants with foliage flowing down slatted timber walls. Soft curves, warm timber, and greenery support privacy, efficiency, connectivity, flow and calm.

The Alexandra House is a mix of structure, texture, and nature. Accoya timber cladding to both the front and rear delivers a warm, natural beauty with high-performance credentials to the facades of the home. A series of site-cast exposed aggregate concrete walls also compliment the warmth of the Accoya - a cost effective solution to develop a exterior wall system over two stories

A triangular form becomes a subtle but consistent design language throughout the project expressed in the roof geometry, exterior steel fabrication, and echoed again in the perforated steel security door panels.

Furniture, Lighting and Atmosphere. The interiors of the Caulfield home were curated with enduring pieces from modern design history, including a Le Corbusier chaise lounge, Louis Poulsen's PH Snowball , sculptural Chasen Suspended by Patricia Urquiola and Flos fixtures sourced from Euroluce and textural Berber style rugs from Loom, alongside key furniture pieces from Jardan. Over the dining table, a George Nelson Bubble Lamp introduces a soft sculptural glow. Each element was chosen to create harmony and warmth, establishing a dialogue between iconic design and bespoke craftsmanship.

Bespoke Shelves for Judaica. One of the most personal design gestures for the Caulfield home was a composition of floating shelves, mounted into the existing walls and designed specifically to house the clients’ collection of silver Judaica.
The arrangement was guided by finding balance, utilizing asymmetry and an instinctive feel for proportion, creating a quiet backdrop that honours the significance of each piece.
