GALLERY 101 — MY THREE STYLING MOVES
A gallery wall can completely shift the feeling of a room when it’s handled with intention.
Across my projects, I tend to come back to three moves:
BOLD BACKDROP
I’ll often deepen the wall colour—blue, olive, something with weight—so the artwork sits with presence rather than floating. It gives the composition gravity, and it allows more graphic, expressive pieces to really come into their own—I think more than they ever would on a white wall.
FOUND PIECES
I try not to get too rigid about this part of the process.
A gallery wall works best when it’s a mix of unrelated pieces—whether that’s your children’s artwork or, in one of my projects, a photograph of my client’s nephew in drag.
Those are the moments that give the wall life and make it feel personal rather than overly considered.
CURIO MOMENT
This is where it becomes more personal.
A clock, an object, something unexpected—just enough to break the structure and give the wall character.
It’s less about filling a space, more about creating a composition that feels right for the home and the souls in it. AS x
