On Wednesday I had the utmost pleasure of visiting Australia Zoo and what a wonderful legacy Steve Irwin has left. An absolute credit to his wonderful family who have carried on his love and work for the wilderness and wildlife.
However, until I read this post from our local historian Samuel Doering - Historian I had no idea that Colin Thiele also passed away on this day.

👀📚 While much of today's media today is focused on Steve Irwin, who died 20 years ago, today also marks exactly 20 years since the death of legendary Australian author, Colin Thiele, who was born in Eudunda.
I grew up reading his books—from Pannikin & Pinta and Blue Fin to February Dragon and, of course, Storm Boy.
Perhaps the most memorable piece of writing that has always stuck with me comes from Sun on the Stubble: Bruno’s father carefully changes the oil in the car after travelling a certain distance, but neglects to put fresh oil back in. Before long, the engine seizes! There's dust, oil splatters, and plenty of cursing!
Colin Thiele had a remarkable ability to make South Australian places and characters come alive on the page - especially places and people with a German identity.
What is your favourite memory of Colin Thiele, or the piece of his writing that has stayed with you?
