Introducing Algae Black.

A new black. A different way of thinking about colour.

At Langridge, we’re always exploring new materials that can expand the possibilities for artists. Our latest discovery comes from Living Ink Technologies, who have developed a remarkable black pigment made from renewable algae waste.

Rather than relying on petroleum-derived carbon black, Living Ink transforms leftover algae biomass into a high-performance black pigment, capturing carbon and giving waste a valuable new purpose.

We’re delighted to introduce Algae Black to our Professional Fluid Acrylic range.

Why Algae Black?
• Made from 100% renewable algae waste feedstock.
• 200% reduction in carbon emissions. Captures more carbon than it emits during production, making it a carbon-negative product.
• PAH-free and a plant-based alternative to petroleum-derived black pigment.

And importantly, this is still about making a proper artists’ paint. We want new materials to earn their place in the studio through performance, not just their story.

A note on the carbon claim: the carbon-negative designation applies to the pigment, not the finished Langridge Fluid Acrylic paint.
We’re not claiming to have solved the environmental challenges of making artists’ materials. We’re taking a practical step towards reducing our reliance on fossil-fuel-derived colourants.

One pigment. One colour. One step at a time.

Tempera painting is one of the oldest forms of painting, dating back to around 2000BC. In this method, pigment is mixed with a binder, usually chicken egg yolk and a mixture of distilled water with alcohol or vinegar, to create a paint that is both permanent and water soluble.

This type of painting has high archival quality as seen in still-existing paintings from art history, such as Niccolò Semitecolo's work (second image).
It is a great alternative to oil paints as it can still achieve highly pigmented colours without the use of modern solvents.

For more information, checkout Daniel V. Thompson Jr's book "The Practice of Tempera Painting" available instore at 47 Smith Street Fitzroy or online at stlukeart.com

"This is the poster colour that has been produced in the same tradition since the company was founded.
NICKER poster colour is made with pure gum arabic as the binder. Compared to dextrin, which is normally used, you can feel a remarkable smooth spread.

In addition, it can be used for various watercolour techniques with little side effects due to the manufacturing method with no excess additives. It is a versatile paint that can be used as both an opaque and transparent watercolour."

Nicker is used by the incredible background artists of Studio Ghibli, like the renowned Kazuo Oga, who brought us many of the dreamy and magical settings we adore in our Ghibli films🍀
