The last of our cabinet on base will be delivered shortly.

The earliest forms of the cabinet were boxes that in turn developed to the larger chest. The basic form of the chest appears to have continued until the advent of the chair and a more sophisticated mode of living, perhaps around the Song dynasty (960A.D. – 1279A.D.). The addition of doors to the chest and then feet reflected a different way of storing articles.

From these humble beginnings, cabinets evolved to become works of art as well as being functional items representing lifestyles, beliefs and tastes of the time.

This type of cabinet represents a transitional design between the chest with its own base and the cabinet with doors but before legs became fully developed. It is a style that clearly remained popular throughout Chinese history.

The upper level of carving has motifs representing the Eight Immortals and symbolises a wish for long life. There is a central medallion of plum blossom. The plum blossom is the favourite Chinese flower and the five petals each represent one of the Five Blessings of happiness, long life, good health, love of virtue and a peaceful passing.

The base has chrysanthemum flowers interspersed with phoenix. The chrysanthemum is a symbol of longevity, it being believed that drinking chrysanthemum tea would extend one’s life. The chrysanthemum is also the flower of autumn, specifically the ninth month of September. The word for nine is pronounced “jiu”, the same as the word for “forever” so enhancing the flower’s longevity symbolism. The phoenix is an auspicious symbol promising a prosperous life ahead.

The Bone Woman by Gautam Jhanjee. "The Bone Woman draws from an Inuit folktale, retold in Clarissa Pinkola Estés’ Women Who Run with the Wolves (1992). In the story, a fisherman unknowingly hauls up a woman’s skeleton from the depths of the sea. Though at first a figure of fear, she is ultimately restored to life, embodying themes of transformation, love, and the cycles of death and renewal.
The painting captures the liminal moment between death and rebirth, emphasising the raw, elemental power of the myth. Like other tales of descent and return, this story resonates across cultures, speaking to the deeper rhythms of loss, renewal, and the reanimation of what was once thought lost."

Justice by Gautam Jhanjee. In Gautam's own words "A meditation on balance, the archetype of Justice is rooted in the reconciliation of opposites. This painting draws from the symbolism of the Tarot’s Justice card, exploring themes of fairness, reason, and moral equilibrium. The scales, symbols of balance across cultures hold the unconscious and consciousness, represented by the fish and the Sun, in perfect harmony. The dark, almost black Sun evokes the Indian Bindu, a symbol of totality, while the law, embodied by a heavy tome, anchors the figure in the realm of institutional justice. Inspired by universal symbols of balance from Taoist Yin-Yang to Jungian wholeness this work is a reflection on the deep, redemptive power of reconciling opposing forces, both within and without."
