A routine backyard cleanup in the quiet coastal town of Barwon Heads, Australia, took an astonishing turn when a 250-kilogram World War II sea mine was discovered hidden on a residential property. The surprisingly intact explosive once carried enough TNT to rip open a ship’s hull, yet decades after the war, it ended up in the hands of antique dealer Ian Royce. Even stranger, many decommissioned sea mines were repurposed as backyard incinerators, leaving behind an unusual legacy in Australian homes.
