Digging Dahlias!

It's wet, muddy and cold, but how satisfying is it seeing these huge clumps come out of the ground? It still amazes me that all of this grows from a single tuber planted back in December.

We're nearly halfway through the big dig. We'll take a short break to get this lot organised before tackling the second half.
This year we've started washing the clumps in the paddock as we dig them. Our soil is heavy and after last week's rain they were absolutely caked in mud. Washing them straight away helps prevent them sitting wet and potentially rotting before we get a chance to divide them.

It's definitely added a bit more time to the process, but having clean clumps ready for dividing has made it well worth the extra effort.

We'd love to grow our own vegetables at home but the reality is we're just way too busy..but how amazing is this box of fresh vegetables from Farm My School 🥦

Each week we pick up our box of fresh, seasonal produce and have a little rummage through to see what surprises are inside. The kids especially love spotting the rhubarb bunches… apple and rhubarb crumble on a cold night is a firm favourite in our house!

So valuable for kids to be involved in learning how to grow their own food 🥦🥕❤️

And just like that, we’re officially under water — our first flood of the year.

The Gellibrand River has gone over the bridge to the back half of the property, and the lower paddocks are now starting to disappear under water too.

How’s everyone else around Victoria holding up? And tell me honestly… are you all frantically digging your dahlias, or waiting for this rain to finally ease up?

About 75% of ours are still in the ground and, for now, they’ll have to stay there. Trying to get the tractor in through this would only create more mess and more losses than leaving them until next week.

Stay warm and dry out there x

The glamorous side of flower farming 😅

This is probably the less-seen side of growing Dahlias… cold rain, muddy boots, heavy clumps and cold hands!

But this messy winter work is what gives us armfuls of blooms and those beautiful autumn displays later on 🍁💐

Our paddocks go under water nearly every winter, so it’s also a good reminder that Dahlia tubers are tougher than people think. A bit (okay… a LOT) of rain won’t rot them if your soil drains well. They definitely don’t want to sit in water forever, but they’re ok waiting a few days until we can dig them out.

Once they’re all lifted, I get to spend the rest of winter in the shed by the fire, dividing tubers and getting ready again for next season 🤎

Well we chose the wrong day today to start digging the Dahlias, it is wet and cold! But 1st row up, washed and in the shed.

To lift my spirits I went back through some pics and found this sweet little 2nd year seedling 🩷❤️🤍

What’s been happening in May here?
Not a lot… yet somehow everything all at once.

May is the quiet pause before the big dig — the time where the dahlias slowly fade back and wait to be lifted and tucked away for winter. We’re still getting the odd flower though, with Xmas Joy refusing to stop blooming, and Mira Marie arriving fashionably late.

The paddock feels peaceful this time of year. Foggy mornings, soft light, and the proteas and natives looking right at home in the colder weather.

Behind the scenes, we’ve been trialling ranunculus and anemones, planting out some crates of ranunculus corms from , and making plans for the seasons ahead. A few thousand Gladys will be going in over the coming months, and I’m hoping to grow our collection of Russell Lupins a little more each year too.

Outside of flowers, life has been full in all the usual ways — kids, farm life, and new exciting plans happening quietly behind the scenes.

We’re looking forward to sharing more over the next couple of months, and we’ll keep everyone updated on dahlia tuber sales as winter dividing begins. This season we may offer a smaller online collection rather than our full range, simply to keep things manageable during order season — but we’ll see how the winter work unfolds first 🪏💐

Before the tubers come out, the seed collecting begins 🌾

Every single seed could become a brand new dahlia no one’s ever seen before ✨ so exciting!

We haven't grown a huge amount from seed before but have gotten the bug and will be planting out hopefully about 500 first year seedlings this year.
