'Fire Sky' 2025 watercolour on paper then merged with old photo from 1967 Tassie Bushfires to create my artwork titled 'When the Sky Burns' 2025 to go with my poem about my memories of the Feb 1967 Hobart Bushfires as a teenager.
“When the Sky Burns”
(A Poem of Fire and Renewal)
Fire, fire—lighting up the orange sky,
Everywhere I turn, it burns, and I ask why?
Fire, fire—devouring all it knows,
Burning trees, burning animals,
Burning dreams as it goes.
When will it stop? No one knows.
Fire, fire—everywhere!
Run, run—but to where?
Fire, fire—everywhere.
Fire, fire—what a roaring sound!
Is that a freight train that I hear?
It grows, it grows—
The fire draws near.
Fire, fire—all around.
If I get trapped,
Will I be found?
Fire, fire—at last, it’s passed.
Silence falls, the danger gone so fast.
Ashes whisper softly to the ground,
In stillness, healing can be found.
From blackened earth, new green will rise,
Life reborn beneath open skies.
For even through destruction’s song,
The Spirit of the Earth grows strong.
