Cold and wet here today so a great chance to fill my fridge with fresh vegetable, chicken and beef broth. Far better than any store bought stock. Once you’ve made it you won’t go back. Whenever we have a roast chicken I freeze the carcass until I have 3-4 to make a large batch of broth.

Stock recipe
- 2 x chicken carcass or 4 beef bones
- 2 carrots
- 1 large onion
- 2 stick cekery
- 1 large tomato
- 1 zucchini
- small bunch mixed herbs
- enough water to cover the contents in pot
-any other veg you like
- dash apple cider vinegar
- salt 2TBS
- 2 bay leaves
- Garlic (I use 4-5 crushed cloves)

Add all ingredients and Slow cook on stove top or in slow cooker for 10-12 hrs. Allow to cool , then strain and store in freezer or in glass bottles in the fridge.

We use broth for risottos, stir-fries, bolognese and curries. The best soup base EVER.

PART 1- Setting up a new no-dig garden bed in the polytunnel 🌱 First crop: potatoes (and yes… grown just in straw, no soil 🙌 = super clean harvest every time!)

Here’s my simple method:

Step 1 – Sprinkle blood & bone directly onto mown grass
Step 2 – Lay a thick layer of newspaper or cardboard, then soak it well 💧
Step 3 – Add a light layer of compost (just enough to cover)
Step 4 – Place potatoes straight on top
Step 5 – Cover with a thick layer of straw + water well
Step 6 – Wait for shoots to push through 🌿 then top up with another fluffy layer of straw

⏳ 4–5 months later = harvest time

I’ve been doing this for years and love it. The potatoes help aerate the bed and break down the straw, leaving behind beautiful compost ready for the next crop. Easy, productive, and no digging required 👌
