A lot of us are looking at the Dirty Dozen list today.

And I get the feeling our collective response is one of shock, but not shocked, followed by a mental note to get more vigilant with our produce washing.

Here's the thing nobody's mentioning.

Those numbers? The 96% of samples that tested positive for pesticides? The 203 different pesticides detected?

That's after the rinse.

Before every single sample was tested, the USDA washed it under cold running water, peeled it where relevant, then tested it.

The Dirty Dozen isn't measuring dirty produce. It's measuring produce that was already "cleaned" the way most people do it. It's actually a very fair way to test, because if that's how most people wash their produce, the numbers they report are the best baseline we can set our expectations to. But clearly there's a lot of scope to get better results for ourselves in our own homes.

This is why we built Crop DeTox. Water alone is not enough any more.

Electrolysis works by sending an electrical current through the water.

Filtered water has had most of its minerals removed, making it an insulator. Pure water does not have enough free ions to carry the electrical current, meaning that electrolysis will occur very slowly or not at all.

Salt (NaCl) is an ionic compound. When dissolved, it dissociates into positive sodium ions (Na+) and negative chloride ions (Cl−).

These free ions move through the water, carrying the electrical charge between the electrodes, allowing a continuous current to flow, which drives the chemical reaction.

The salt also serves as a catalyst. Without salt, charge builds up at the electrodes, creating a high-resistance barrier that stops the process.

During electrolysis, water breaks down into H+ (acidic) at the anode and OH- (basic) at the cathode. Salt ions migrate to these electrodes to neutralize the charge buildup, allowing the electrolysis to proceed efficiently.

Science! 😉

A quick reminder if you own a Crop DeTox: give it a clean.

After each use, pop the top disc off and give it a wipe down and dry before putting it away to prevebt dirt build up and mould. That’s really all it takes to keep everything working at its best.

A device that cleans your produce deserves a little care itself.

If you’re new here, Crop DeTox uses electrolysis to remove up to 99.9% of pesticide residue and bacteria from your fruit and vegetables. No chemicals, no refills, nothing added to your water. Just science, doing its thing.

Before there was a device, there was a conversation.

A few years ago, Marnie, my wife and co-everything, was in the middle of a rollercoaster IVF journey.

She was lucky enough to consult with Sharon Kolkka, one of Australia's most respected wellness experts and co-author of How to Be Well. Sharon shared her wisdom on pesticides, oxidative stress, endocrine disruptors, and the surprisingly powerful role that what we eat (and how we clean it) plays in our overall health.

One of the things she introduced us to was the benefits of electrolysed water for cleaning produce.

We didn't know then where that would lead. But Marnie went on to have a successful IVF journey and our beautiful baby boy arrived. And the idea that had taken root, that there had to be a better, simpler way to clean what we feed ourselves and our families, became Crop DeTox.

We're so grateful to Sharon, to Karen, and to every person who pointed us toward asking better questions. Seeing Marnie's story, and Crop DeTox get a little mention in the new book feels very full circle 💚

Hormonal Harmony is available now.

Strawberries going mushy in the fridge? It’s usually not the washing, it’s the moisture left behind.

After washing your strawberries, gently pat them completely dry with a clean towel. Any excess water sitting on the surface speeds up spoilage and softening.

It honestly doesn’t matter how you wash them, drying them properly is the step that keeps them firm longer.

We use Crop DeTox to wash ours, but if you don’t have one yet, a diluted vinegar rinse works well too. One thing to avoid is baking soda. It can damage the delicate cell membranes in strawberries, which makes them break down and go mushy faster.

A quick dry after washing can easily add a few extra days of fresh, firm berries in the fridge.

Rinsing is a habit, not a solution.

Crop DeTox uses electrolysis to actually break down what's on your produce, pesticide residue, bacteria, and other undesirables. Six minutes in the sink. No chemicals, no refills, no extra steps.

Water rinses. Crop DeTox cleans.

Picking good produce means touching it.

But you don’t know who touched it before you.

Wash it properly when you get home.

Crop DeTox uses electrolysis to activate the wash water, helping remove bacteria and pesticide residue from fresh produce.

In the new version, we’ve added a rotating disc that gently moves the water during the cycle so the activated water reaches all surfaces of the produce, even the pieces that float.

Crop DeTox 2.0 is here.

We’ve added a way to help circulate the water during the wash cycle, so everything gets better coverage, even the bits that float.

Same electrolysis technology that kills bacteria and removes pesticide residue.

It’s a little stronger, a little smarter, and easier to clean.

Same science. Now in stock.

All about the little things...

A low-tox kitchen isn’t made from a single swap or a spotless space — it’s made from the everyday moments that shape how we live and eat.

It’s in the small hands learning to stir, the citrus scent on a cutting board, the quiet choice to keep things simple and clean.

Here are a few little habits that make a big difference over time:
🥣 Swap plastic for glass or stainless, better for your food and the planet.
🧽 Keep cleaning simple, warm water, vinegar, and a soft cloth work wonders.
🥕 Wash produce before it hits the fridge, it keeps it fresher, longer.
🍋 Use lemon to freshen chopping boards naturally.
👩‍👧 Invite the kids in, let them wash, mix, and make a little mess.

It’s the calm, mindful rhythm that turns cooking into connection and chores into care.
Every small choice builds a home that feels lighter, cleaner, and more alive.

Not everything loves the cold ❄️

It’s easy to think the fridge keeps everything fresh, but for some fruit and veg, those chilly temps do more harm than good.

Cold can dull flavours, mess with textures, and even stop ripening altogether. Here are a few that prefer life outside the fridge:

🥔 Potatoes & sweet potatoes — the cold turns their starches into sugar, making them grainy and oddly sweet when cooked.
🍅 Tomatoes — the cold breaks down their cell structure, leaving them mealy and bland.
🥑 Avocados (until ripe) — they stop ripening in the fridge, then go from rock hard to mush.
🧄 Garlic & onions — moisture makes them sprout faster and go soft.
🍌 Bananas — the skin turns black, and the inside stops ripening evenly.

Keep these in a cool, dark spot instead, and they’ll taste better, last longer, and help you waste less.
